Château Lynch-Bages 2025 once again confirms its status as one of the great names of Pauillac. The wine combines power and concentration with striking precision and freshness. In an early and balanced vintage, Lynch-Bages appears to have produced a classic Pauillac with ripe fruit, refined tannins, and impressive aging potential.
Château Lynch-Bages
Château Lynch-Bages has been one of the most sought-after wines of Pauillac for decades. Since the 1855 classification, the château has held the status of Cinquième Grand Cru Classé, yet within Bordeaux, Lynch-Bages is often regarded as a wine that regularly surpasses its classification. The combination of power, consistency, and aging potential has earned the château a loyal following of enthusiasts.
Under the leadership of the Cazes family, Lynch-Bages developed into one of the absolute references of the Médoc. The style is typically rich, structured, and distinctly Pauillac, yet always with sufficient freshness and precision to remain elegant. You can find more information about the château under the Winery tab.
Origin and growing season in Pauillac
The vineyards of Château Lynch-Bages are situated on the famous Garonne gravel soils of Pauillac. These deep, gravelly terroirs ensure excellent drainage and provide Cabernet Sauvignon with the ideal conditions to ripen slowly and fully. The result is wines with structure, tension, and great aging potential.
The 2025 growing season ranks among the earliest since 1989. A mild winter without frost or hail was followed by a warm, relatively dry spring with excellent sanitary conditions. Flowering proceeded quickly and uniformly, while the summer was marked by two heatwaves. Crucial were the moments of rainfall in late August, which reduced water stress, retained freshness, and helped the grapes ripen perfectly without loss of balance. The harvest took place between September 9 and 21.
Grapes and vinification
The Château Lynch-Bages 2025 blend consists of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. As usual, Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of the wine, providing structure, length, and the classic Pauillac signature, while Merlot adds extra texture and roundness.
The grapes were harvested by hand and rigorously selected both in the vineyard and on the sorting table. After vinification, the wine ages for approximately 18 months in French oak barrels, 75% of which are new. This aging process imparts extra complexity and structure without overpowering the character of the fruit.
Style and taste profile
Château Lynch-Bages 2025 displays a deep, intense style with classic Pauillac expression. Expect aromas of blackcurrant, cassis, and dark fruit, complemented by spicy notes, graphite, and subtle oak influences. According to Technical Director Nicolas Labenne, the wine presents a deep color, complex aromas of black fruit and spices, and a strikingly harmonious balance.
On the palate, the wine combines concentration with refinement. The texture is rich and silky, while the tannins remain refined and elegant. What makes the 2025 special is the combination of power and precision. The wine possesses distinct density and ripeness, yet simultaneously retains freshness and tension. In this respect, Lynch-Bages 2025 appears to be fully in line with the château's great classic vintages.
A classic Pauillac with aging potential
2025 displays all the hallmarks of a strong Lynch-Bages: ripe dark fruit, structure, precision, and longevity. Thanks to early yet balanced ripening and retained freshness, this vintage appears perfectly suited for further bottle aging. For lovers of classic Pauillac with both power and elegance, Château Lynch-Bages 2025 is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the appellation.

Parker
RP (94-97) The 2025 Lynch-Bages wafts from the glass with aromas of dark wild berries, lead pencil and spices, framed by well-integrated new oak. Full-bodied, dense and concentrated, it’s deep and muscular, with a broad-shouldered profile, yet more velvety and precise than usual, showing a touch of freshness through the mid-palate, concluding with a long, cassis-inflected finish. Without departing from its customary style—combining power and generosity in youth—it is more approachable en primeur, with softer, more polished tannins than in recent vintages. This is a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, matured with 75% new oak.

Château Lynch-Bages spans some 100 hectares on the Bages plateau, where deep Garonne gravels over limestone favor Cabernet Sauvignon, which dominates the vineyard. Jean-Michel Cazes shaped the estate’s modern identity, and Jean-Charles Cazes now directs it, having inaugurated the new winery in 2020.
Viticulture proceeds with precision, with careful canopy management and parcel-by-parcel harvesting at full phenolic maturity. In the cellar, fermentations take place in stainless steel and concrete vats sized to each parcel, before élevage in barrels, around 70% new, with regular rackings. The new winery affords tighter control over temperatures and extractions, refining rather than amplifying the wines.
Lynch-Bages delivers its customary Pauillac frame, but recent vintages show more restraint. The tannins feel better defined and the fruit more clearly articulated, without any loss of depth. The range revolves around the grand vin, with a second wine produced to the same exacting standards. The direction remains consistent: maintain the estate’s power while improving integration and detail.
The 2025 growing season began with some rain in May, which triggered early pressure from mildew and required vigilance in the vineyards. Conditions turned drier through the summer, and after August, berries remained small, concentrating the skins-to-juice ratio. The harvest started early, on September 8, and concluded on September 21, delivering notably homogeneous ripeness across the parcels—a pattern not seen since 1989. The wines have between 13% and 13.5% alcohol, retaining a very fresh profile with a low pH. Fermentations proceeded cleanly. In the glass, 2025 follows the estate’s ongoing stylistic evolution, preserving its broad-shouldered structure while presenting more velvety, precise tannins. The result confirms a strong performance, with clarity, freshness and control defining the vintage.

Score: 97-98. Lots of great energy, with a precision and focus that sends you down the road to gorgeous dark fruits and mineral nuances. A cool, minty note. Medium- to full-bodied. Racy and intense, with a lightness at the end. Juicy fruit, too. A blend of 66% cabernet sauvignon, 28% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot.

Vinous
(96-98) The 2025 Lynch-Bages was picked 9 to 21 September and matured in 75% new oak barrels. This has a stunning bouquet with exceptionally pure blackberry, cassis and subtle violet scents, the oak seamlessly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with finely embroidered tannins, perfect acidity, a touch of cedar and black pepper that dovetails into a peacock's tail finish that “clings” to the mouth. This continues the strongest run from Lynch-Bages since the 1980s and, perhaps with the 2025, it is close to surpassing that.

The founder of Lynch-Bages is the Irish John Lynch who settled in Bordeaux in the 17th century. The village of Bages is home to the château. Since 1933, Lynch-Bages has been run by the Cazes family, an institution in the Médoc and a famous name in the world of wine. Third generation André Cazes was mayor of the municipality of Pauillac from 1947 to 1991. His son Jean-Michel has been running the family domain for several decades. His motto is; "great wine in search of the absolute". Given the appreciation for and status of Lynch-Bages, this 'absolute' has been reasonably achieved. Officially the château has the status of 5th Grand Cru Classé, but unofficially it is counted among the greatest of the Médoc. The other parts of the family business can also be described as very successful. Cordeillan-Bages, winery, hotel and best dining in the surrounding area and restaurant / caterer Le Chapon Fin in Bordeaux are good examples of this. Father André founded the Commanderie du Bontemps de Médoc in the late 1940s and Jean-Michel can call himself the founder of the École du Bordeaux. In short, an eventful family in the world of wine.
