The 2025 Château Le Pin Pomerol once again ranks among the absolute icons of Bordeaux. With a production of only about ten barriques and derived exclusively from 100% Merlot, Le Pin is one of the most exclusive and sought-after wines in the world. The 2025 vintage combines the characteristic opulence of the château with striking precision, elegance, and concentration, making this one of the most fascinating Le Pins of recent years.
Château Le Pin
Château Le Pin was founded in the late 1970s by Jacques Thienpont and quickly grew into one of the world's greatest cult wines. The estate comprises just a few hectares in the heart of Pomerol and produces only a very limited number of bottles annually. Thanks to extremely low yields, meticulous selection, and an uncompromising approach, Le Pin is now among the most coveted and rare wines of Bordeaux.

The year 2025
2025 was characterized by very small grapes and an exceptionally low yield of only approximately 20 hectoliters per hectare. Only the best plots were included in the Grand Vin; younger vines that had suffered from drought stress were kept out of the blend. The harvest took place over just two days, on September 5 and 10, with every bunch carefully selected by hand to exclude even slightly dried berries.
The wine consists entirely of Merlot and ages in approximately two-thirds new French oak, supplemented by one-year-old barrels from Seguin Moreau and Taransaud, among others. Production amounts to only about ten barriques, making 2025 once again one of the rarest vintages from Le Pin.
Scent, taste and character
The 2025 opens with a deep and layered bouquet of ripe plums, sweet cherries, and raspberries, followed by notes of black truffle, graphite, incense, espresso, cedarwood, and subtle floral nuances. As the wine opens up, refined aromas of fresh mushrooms, bark, liquorice, and a hint of white and black pepper emerge.
On the palate, Le Pin displays its characteristic velvety texture. The wine is rich and concentrated, yet at the same time remarkably refined and energetic. Ripe dark fruit is supported by silky tannins and an impressive freshness, making the wine appear vertical and precise rather than exuberant. The exceptional balance between power, elegance, and minerality gives the wine an almost weightless intensity.
The finish is impressively long and complex, with persistent notes of dark fruit, graphite, spices, and earthy nuances that continue to develop for minutes. It is a wine that constantly reveals new layers.
An iconic Pomerol
Le Pin has been among the most sought-after wines in the world for decades. The combination of an extremely small estate, extremely low yields, and uncompromising selection makes every vintage special. In 2025, the focus is not only on exceptional quality but also on the fact that this is the last vintage produced under the direction of Guillaume Thienpont.
With its combination of intensity, finesse, and immense depth, the 2025 undoubtedly belongs among the great wines of Pomerol for aging.
Drinking window and food and wine pairings
The 2025 Château Le Pin will show its first complexity from around 2032 and can effortlessly continue to develop until at least 2060.
Preferably serve the wine at 16 to 18°C and decant it, especially when young, at least two hours in advance.
This exceptional Pomerol pairs beautifully with beef tenderloin, Wagyu, roe deer, venison, pigeon, truffle dishes, veal sweetbreads, and refined classic French dishes.

The depth and intensity give incredible energy in this Le Pin at this stage. The plum, dried flower, bark and fresh mushroom character is unique and it continues on the midpalate and finish. It’s endless and sophisticated with an ethereal nature. Transcendental in many ways. Can’t wait to try it from bottle. Two thirds the normal production. Pure merlot. Magic.

Vinous
The 2025 Le Pin was picked in two passes through the vines on September 5 and 10 at just 20 hl/ha due to the small berry size, matured in two-thirds new oak and one-third one-year-old (Seguin Moreau and Taransaud). The younger vines that were stressed were not used in the blend. It takes time to unfold on the nose, with red berry fruit, black truffle and veins of graphite. The oak is very discretely used here. The palate is medium-bodied with velvety tannins, fine depth, though this is more a linear, vertical Le Pin rather than the more flamboyant 2022. A tingle of white and black pepper, a dab of licorice towards the finish that lingers temptingly. I suspect this will demand three to five years to really show its mettle.
- Neal Martin
The 2025 Le Pin is a wild, exotic beauty. Deeply layered spice overtones and a kiss of French oak lead into a core of vibrant dark-fleshed fruit. In this tasting, Le Pin comes across as a bit heavy and monolithic, largely because of yields that were just 20 hectoliters per hectare. I am sure those who can taste Le Pin will adore it, but personally, I prefer the greater tension and energy of its sibling, L'If, a much more contemporary wine that also costs about 1/20th the price. Expect the 2025 Le Pin to be rare (only ten barrels produced) and very pricey. The big news at Le Pin is that the estate has added a choice parcel measuring about one hectare planted with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon that formerly belonged to L'Evangile. That will increase Le Pin's planted surface area from two to three hectares (plus another 0.7 hectares that are being redeveloped). Sadly, this is the last vintage made by Guillaume Thienpont.

Château Le Pin is a very exclusive and prestigious winery from Bordeaux, located in the Pomerol appellation on the right bank of the Gironde River.
History of Château Le Pin
Château Le Pin was founded in the late 1970s by Jacques Thienpont, a Belgian wine enthusiast and businessman. Jacques Thienpont came from a family with a background in the wine business, and his passion for Bordeaux wines led him to pursue the dream of owning his own vineyard. In 1979, Jacques Thienpont bought a small, neglected estate in the Pomerol appellation. The estate, known as Le Pin, was previously a simple farm with a few vineyards. Jacques Thienpont wanted to transform the property into a world-class winery. He invested in the vineyards and replanted with an emphasis on quality grape varieties, especially Merlot. The estate's first vintage was produced in 1981 and marked the beginning of Château Le Pin's journey to become a sought-after and exclusive wine producer.
Jacques Thienpont took a minimalist and practical approach to winemaking. The estate is known for its attention to detail, organic farming practices and avoidance of excessive interference in the winemaking process to maximize the terroir. In the 1980s and 1990s, Château Le Pin quickly gained a reputation for producing wines of exceptional quality and concentration. The limited production and the consistently high quality of the vintages led to a strong increase in demand. The wines of Château Le Pin achieved cult status among wine lovers and collectors. The small size of the estate, the commitment to quality and the exclusivity of the wines contributed to their desirability and high market prices. Jacques Thienpont's son, Alexandre Thienpont, is actively involved in the management of Château Le Pin. The family's dedication to preserving the estate's unique character and quality continues into the next generation. Château Le Pin remains a symbol of what can be achieved with vision, dedication and commitment to quality in the world of Bordeaux wines. The story illustrates the ability of a relatively young estate to achieve worldwide recognition and fame.
Production and terroir of Château Le Pin
The vineyard of Château Le Pin is small, covering only about 2 hectares (about 5 acres). This small size contributes to the exclusivity and rarity of its wines. The terroir of Château Le Pin is characterized by gravelly soils mixed with clay, typical of the Pomerol appellation. The unique combination of soil and microclimate influences the character of the wines. Château Le Pin is known for its meticulous and practical approach to winemaking. The vineyard is carefully maintained and the grapes are harvested by hand to ensure the highest quality. The estate places a strong emphasis on organic and sustainable viticultural practices. The goal is for the vineyard to express its unique terroir in the wines. The flagship of Château Le Pin "Le Pin" is a Merlot-dominant wine, with small percentages of Cabernet Franc contributing to the blend. Le Pin is celebrated for its intensity, concentration and silky texture. Like many great wines from Bordeaux, this wine is known for aging wonderfully while showing a certain approachability in its youth.
Exclusivity of Château Le Pin
Château Le Pin produces only a few thousand cases of wine per vintage due to the small size of the vineyard. This limited production, combined with the estate's reputation for quality, has made Le Pin one of the rarest and most sought-after wines in the world. The exclusivity of Château Le Pin is reflected in its high market prices and cult status among collectors. Château Le Pin's commitment to quality, small-scale production and the distinctive character of its wines have elevated it to the status of one of the most iconic and coveted names in Bordeaux. The estate's story illustrates how a focus on craftsmanship and terroir expression can lead to extraordinary success in the wine world.
