PREMIERE - EXPECTED SPRING 2028. 2025 Château Clos Saint Martin is one of the most exclusive and small-scale Grand Cru Classés of Saint-Émilion.
Small estate on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion
Clos Saint Martin is situated on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, right next to Château Canon. The estate was founded in 1850 and is named after the nearby church of Saint-Martin. At just 1.36 hectares, Clos Saint Martin is the smallest classified cru of Saint-Émilion. The estate is managed by Sophie Fourcade, a member of the Reiffers family, which has been active in Saint-Émilion since the 17th century. Michel Rolland is involved as a consultant winemaker.
Merlot, limestone and refined vinification
The vineyard is planted on clay and limestone soils with a south-westerly exposure. The average age of the vines is 37 years. The planting consists of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand. This is followed by a cold maceration of six days at 8°C, followed by fermentation in new oak barrels and amphorae. Malolactic fermentation also takes place in new wood.
Style and flavor profile of Clos Saint Martin 2025
The wine ages for approximately 18 months, 80% in new oak barrels and 20% in amphorae. The first four months involve sur lie aging, during which the wine is stirred twice a week. This imparts extra volume, texture, and depth. Clos Saint Martin is known for its combination of ripe dark fruit, refined spiciness, chalky freshness, and an elegant yet distinct structure. The 2025 is expected to be a concentrated, precise, and long-lasting Saint-Émilion with very limited production.

(95-97) The 2025 Clos Saint-Martin is a very sexy wine. Silky, plush contours wrap around the palate. Vinification in equal parts barrel and amphora exalts the flavors so beautifully. Dark red-toned fruit, mocha, spice, menthol, licorice caress the palate. Blood orange and a whole range of floral top notes appear later, lifting the effortless finish. Superb. (93-95) The 2025 Clos Saint-Martin comes from the minuscule 1.36-hectare property, aged in 80% new oak this year, including some terracotta jars. Readers should note that all samples were extracted from the jars. I wonder how many tasters know this, or enquired, because it unequivocally influenced the sample that I requested to taste twice. This is more savoury on the nose, tertiary, perhaps those jars steering the aromatics in a different direction. The palate has a sorbet-like freshness on the entry. Pliant tannins, fine depth, perhaps just a little confit-like towards the finish, where maybe the warm summer got to the fruit. A second bottle was less marked by the terracotta and certainly had a more minerally and quite endearing finish. Difficult to assess based on this, but I give it the benefit of the doubt.
