Persoonlijke gegevens
Rafael Palacios, brother of renowned winemaker Alvaro Palacios from Priorat, began making wine in Valdeorras in 2004. He purchased old vineyards of Godello grapes from local farmers. All 22.5 hectares of the company are planted with this grape, spread across 26 vineyards. The vines range in age from 7 to 91 years. All plots are farmed organically. His best plots: Sorte O Soro, Sorte Antiga, and Os Canieros, are fully biodynamically cultivated. The name of the wine, As Sortes, is Galician for "lots of inheritance." The Galician inheritance system is such that each child receives an equal share of a plot of land. This naturally fragments the vineyards, and everyone receives a "sorte," or lot. It often happens that a 1-hectare vineyard is divided into 10 different lots or "sortes." The plural As Sortes therefore means many lots together in one wine.
Rafa's vineyards are located in Santa Cruz do Bolo, where the soil is different from the rest of Valdeorras. The soil here is entirely granitic, with a topsoil of coarse sand grains originating from the eroded granite. The granite here is composed of feldspar, mica, and quartz. Quartz, a mineral of crystallized silica, in particular gives the wines a mineral and saline character. The high rainfall gives the soils a very low pH and therefore very high acidity. All the "sortes" have the same soils, with only the texture and size of the grains varying. The altitude ranges from 650 to 720 meters.
Rafa attaches great importance to the selective harvest of each plot, precisely to preserve the unique character of each. The grapes are placed on the selection table at harvest time. Cold maceration and maximum protection against oxidation are other techniques he uses to ensure quality is preserved. The use of casks is crucial. Rafa selects oak from northern French forests: the colder the forest, the less aromatic the wood, becoming more neutral and providing better oxygenation for lees aging. The oak is lightly toasted for many hours at a very low heat to open the pores of the barrique, but without being marked by smoke or torrefaction aromas. He uses bâtonnage less often than before, as he finds that overusing the yeast cells causes the wines to lose character and personality. The As Sortes is fermented in large 500-liter wooden casks for a good month, after which the wine is aged in the same casks for six months.
The As Sortes is fresh, clean, and complex, and quite unlike other white wines from Valdeorras. On the nose, we encounter notes of yellow fruit, citrus, and herbs, accented by creamy notes and just a hint of smoke. The palate is medium-bodied with excellent acidity, full-bodied and spicy, yet simultaneously fresh and smooth. The finish is slightly salty and minerally, lingering on the palate. A limited production run of (only) 15,000 bottles of As Sortes is highly recommended for those a little tired of Chardonnay. The wine has a good drinking window until at least 2030+.

The 2022 As Sortes is evolving quite slowly and is more polished than when I first tasted it in November 2023. It feels approachable now and seems to have calmed down, with a profile that doesn't point at the warm and dry year they had in the zone. It has good ripeness (14% alcohol), a vibrant palate with a pH of 3.02 and 7.2 grams of acidity and a long, dry and tasty finish. It transcends the vintage. 22,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023.
I only tasted the entry-level wine from 2023, a mild vintage of good quality, but I had the chance to follow up on the 2022s that I already tasted last year, a great opportunity but not always possible. His vineyards—28.5 hectares in 28 separate plots—are in the process of being certified organic and biodynamic.

From: The Whites of Rueda Get Serious (Feb 2024)
The 2021 Godello As Sortes is sourced from micro-plots in the O Bolo area, Valdeorras and aged for eight months in barrel on lees. Green with a golden sheen, this falls into the oxidative Godello category, with appealing notes of green apple and herbs complemented by a hint of hops and faint oak. Rich, concentrated and refreshing, heightened acidity unleashes energy on the palate, providing a precise, long-lasting, vibrant mouthfeel and a vivid experience.

Rafa Palacios is the white winemaker of Spain. In barely 1 decade he has put himself on the map as the specialist of top white wines. His influence was enormous. At the moment, Godello is one of Spain's most popular white grape varieties and all the well-known oenologists in Valdeorras have their own project.
Rafael Palacios is the youngest brother of Alvaro Palacios, who became best known for his project in the Priorat. The Palacios family has had the famous Palacios-Remondo bodega in the town of Alfaro (Rioja Baja) for many years, where Alvaro left for Priorat in the late 80s. Rafa is the youngest of nine siblings and worked as an oenologist on the family estate in Rioja. He mainly focused on perfecting the white wine Plácet and thus got a taste for making top white wines in Spain.
After an internship in Valdeorras in Galicia, he was convinced that it would be here that he would make his great white wine with Godello, the typical white grape of this region. He left everything behind at the end of 2003 and in a few months he searched for and bought the oldest vineyards Godello in the highest valley of Valdeorras, Valle del Bibei. He mainly looked for the highest elevation, most difficult to access and least profitable vineyards that the villagers were no longer interested in because they involved too much work and too few yields. He managed to buy 12 hectares in a short time, rented a large garage and cellar nearby for vinification, and in 2004 he made his first As Sortes. His second wine, the Louro, followed a year later.
This wine immediately hit like a bomb and in a short time his wines gained a true cult status at home and abroad. In the meantime, he also uses small amounts of Treixadura and is already thinking about doing even better. The construction of the bodega is completely subordinate to the acquisition of the best vineyards and the making of the best white wine, but in 2011 the building plans have matured sufficiently and he has built a small and practical hall with a view of the vineyard of Sorte Antiga.
Rafael himself calls the Godello the 'lung' of his wines; It is a glyceric variety, with very few aromas. Nevertheless, at high altitudes, this grape is capable of true top performance and acquires a freshness that is unprecedented. Godello naturally has high tartaric acids, which guarantees a good evolution over time. Treixadura is similar to Godello but has more aromatic capacities.
