A beautiful, full-bodied red wine with aromas of cherries, plums, and a hint of coffee/leather. A juicy attack with abundant red fruit flavors. It's an accessible wine with plenty of flavor, deliciously juicy and concentrated, and has a beautiful finish with fresh acidity. This wine is already much more accessible than its big brother, the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Robert Parker calls it "a terrific easy-drinking wine from a classic vintage," and there's nothing more to add. One of the best Montepulcianos. Impressive value for the money.
Frederico Carletti, the current owner of Azienda Agricola Poliziano, is responsible for a revolutionary change. Carletti has transformed Poliziano into a true winery, producing and bottling its own wines. He moved to Piedmont to study oenology at university. He then completed internships with various wineries to gain the necessary practical experience. Then it was time to fulfill his childhood dream. Since his arrival in 1981, the company has risen rapidly.
Among his innovations were the planting of new grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as the creation of new wines such as Le Stanze, Elegia, and a Riserva of distinct vineyards, like Vigna Asinone. With these flagship wines, Carletti captured the hearts of wine lovers and won numerous awards at international competitions. Poliziano is now widely regarded as one of the great pioneers of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.

From: Vino Nobile di Montepulciano: An Unstoppable Force (Feb 2025)
Incredibly pretty, the 2023 Rosso di Montepulciano wafts up with a lovely mix of wild strawberries, violets, lavender and wet stones. This is juicy in style and remarkably pure, with a subtle tinge of minerality and vividly ripe cherry-berry fruit notes that flow across a stream of fresh acidity. It tapers off crisp and only gently tannic yet poised with medium length. This is fantastic for the difficult 2023 vintage and not your typical Poliziano Rosso, with just 50% of production and 100% Sangiovese.

I toured the newly outfitted Poliziano winery with proprietor Federico Carletti and his daughter, Maria Stella Carletti, who has taken over winemaking responsibilities at the estate. Federico Carletti has added a new logistics center, cellar, fermentation room and automated bottling line in an attempt to prepare the next generation for “the next 20 years.” With 155 hectares of vines spread out across the four communes of Maremma, Cortona, Montepulciano and Torrita, an update to their cellars was in order. As for the wines, I have always loved the balance of polish and terroir transparency that Poliziano captures so well. Their Le Caggiole was one of the first single-vineyard wines in the region, followed by the Asinone. On this visit, the 2021 Asinone really stole the show, but that is more about vintage than anything else, as the 2020 Le Caggiole hails from a warm and more elegant-styled year. The 2020 simply lacks the depth and structural haft to take it to the next level. With that said, I look forward to tasting the 2021, which will bear the Pieve classification. Another new release to consider is the 2023 Rosso di Montepulciano, which is a bit of a rare bird. Typically a blend of Sangiovese with 20% Merlot, the 2023 is 100% Sangiovese due to issues with Peronospora. The 2023 vintage saw a 50% reduction in quantity across the board.

Wickedly fresh and floral, the 2021 Rosso di Montepulciano wafts up from the glass with a bouquet of wild strawberries, stems and all, plus touches of mint and blood orange. This steps softly yet with impact, impressing with fleshy red and blue fruits expertly offset by a salty core of minerality. Raspberry and blueberry preserves and rosy inner florals make the lightly tannic and medium-length finish a total pleasure. This is a beautiful blending of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Merlot.

The polished style of Poliziano shines bright in this set of new releases, especially with the 2019 single-vineyard Asinone, a varietal Sangiovese from higher elevations (up to 400 meters) in the western part of the region. For many years now, the focus of the house has been on the development of individual crus, Asinone and Le Caggiole, which will see an upgrade into the new Pieve designation over time. The Carletti family deeply believes in the potential of Sangiovese in the region, as they slowly push most of their wines toward a higher percentage of the variety. Federico Carletti remains the family's winemaker, aided by the third-generation Maria Stella and Francesco Carletti. Over the past decade, the estate has undergone major changes. A focus on the vineyards, a reduction of small barrels, and a push toward Sangiovese purity through terroir have kept Poliziano at the cutting edge of Montepulciano’s growth.
