René Barbier and the philosophy of Òrbita Venus

At the heart of Òrbita Venus is René Barbier , an icon of the Catalan wine world and founder of the legendary Clos Mogador in Priorat. Barbier is one of the pioneers who shaped Catalonia's modern wine landscape. With Òrbita Venus, he focuses on a different region, Conca de Barberà , where he collaborates with young winemakers to create new, vibrant wines with a distinct sense of place.

The project arose from collaboration and experimentation. Alongside Barbier , Mariona, Albert, and Oriol of Succès Vinícola are also involved—a young collective known for their pure, expressive wines made from indigenous grapes. Their shared vision: to make wines that are light yet complex; subtle yet profound. The Òrbita Venus Trepat 2024 is a striking example of this.

The origin: Conca de Barberà

The wine comes from Conca de Barberà , a historic wine region inland from Tarragona, Catalonia. The region lies at an altitude of 350 to 700 meters and is surrounded by the Prades Mountains. This creates cool nights and mild days – conditions that allow the grapes to ripen slowly and retain their acidity.

The soil consists of limestone and clay, with excellent drainage and moderate fertility. This forces the vines to develop deep roots, giving the wines a mineral precision and elegance. Conca de Barberà is especially known for the Trepat grape, a local variety that finds its most refined expression here.

The Trepat grape

Trepat is an indigenous red grape variety found almost exclusively in Conca de Barberà and Costers del Segre. For a long time, it was primarily used for light rosé wines, but modern winemakers like Barbier and Succès Vinícola are demonstrating that Trepat can also produce brilliant, fresh red wines. The grape produces elegant, spicy, and fruity wines with a characteristically low alcohol content.

In the 2024 Òrbita Venus Trepat, Trepat reveals itself at its most refined: light in color, delicate in structure, and with impressive aromatic complexity. It's a wine not about power, but about finesse.

Vinification and maturation

The wine is made entirely from 100% Trepat grapes, sourced from two small plots in Conca de Barberà. Some of the grapes are vinified with whole bunches, resulting in fresh, fruity aromas and fine tannins. The remaining grapes remain on the skins for longer—between two and three months—giving the wine additional structure and depth.

After fermentation, the two parts are combined and the wine matures for ten months in concrete tanks . No wood is used, so that the pure expression of the grape is preserved. The end result is a light red wine with only 11% alcohol, refined acidity, and a remarkable freshness.

Color, smell and taste

The Òrbita Venus Trepat 2024 has a bright, ruby-red color with a slightly transparent rim. The nose is expressive and delicate, with notes of wild strawberry, cherry, rosehip, and white pepper. Subtle earthy and spicy nuances, typical of the Trepat grape, also emerge.

On the palate, the wine is silky smooth, with refined acidity and a precise balance of fruit and spice. The low alcohol content creates a light mouthfeel, while the long finish remains fresh and vibrant. This is a wine reminiscent of an elegant Pinot Noir, but with a distinctly Catalan character.

The signature of Òrbita Venus

The philosophy of Òrbita Venus revolves around freedom, experimentation, and enjoyment. As the producers themselves say: "Òrbita Venus means risk, fun, and learning." This open approach results in wines made not by rules, but by feeling. The collaboration between experienced winemakers like René Barbier and young talent like Succès Vinícola produces wines that are both authentic and innovative.

The Trepat 2024 exemplifies that balance. It's a wine that, with its subtle structure, crisp acidity, and low alcohol, demonstrates a modern approach to elegance. A red wine that invites you to enjoy it slightly chilled and perfectly complements contemporary cuisine.

Orbita Venus is new at Grandcruwijnen: four pure, natural wines from Montsant with low alcohol (around 10–11%). Created by René Barbier Jr. and Sara Pérez, with respect for soil, biodiversity and time. Light, refined and energetic – wines that let nature speak. Now exclusively available at Grandcruwijnen for true wine lovers.

Orbita Venus Winery

Orbita Venus is a small-scale project in Montsant where wine is allowed to emerge rather than be made. The focus lies on living soils, manual vineyard work and minimal cellar intervention. The result is a line of four wines with freshness, tension and pure terroir character.

The Winemakers of Orbita Venus

The project is guided by René Barbier Jr. (known from Clos Mogador) and Sara Pérez (of Venus la Universal). Their shared vision: let nature do the talking, work with precision yet humility, and keep the wines light-footed without sacrificing depth.

Montsant Appellation

The vineyards sit in Catalonia’s Montsant – rugged, stony and cool enough to preserve freshness. Think slate and limestone soils, Mediterranean herbs and low yields. Learn more about the region here: Montsant appellation.

Spontaneous Fermentation at Orbita Venus

Harvest by hand, strict selection and fermentation with native yeasts. Aged in amphorae and used oak barrels, without new oak. Barely any fining or filtering; only a hint of sulphur at bottling. The wines carry intentionally low alcohol (around 10–11%), making them fresh, energetic and very drinkable, yet textured and precise.

The Four Wines

White – Macabeo: Vibrant and mineral, with citrus, almond blossom and a subtle saline note. Made from Macabeo; partly aged in amphora for extra tension and texture.

White – Parellada: Elegant and floral, featuring fresh apple, white peach and gentle herbs. Based on Parellada; refined, light and crystal clear.

Rosé – Trepat & Macabeo: A lively, spicy rosé with the structure of a light red. Made from Trepat and Macabeo; juicy, precise and refreshingly different.

Red – Trepat: Pale in colour but full of character. Red cherry, pomegranate, pepper and Mediterranean herbs, with a vibrant acid backbone and an earthy touch. 100% Trepat.

Labels & Identity of Orbita Venus

The labels are artistic and poetic, referencing earth, seasons and cycles. They reflect the calm, precise style of the wines – understated, transparent and resonant.
