Elegant and feminine. Biodynamic. The philosophy of Domaine Weinbach (a family business of the Faller family) is to produce harmonious and elegant wines with intense fruitiness, combining purity and clarity with concentration and complexity. Pale-colored wine with a fantastic nose featuring ripeness, richness, and freshness, ranging from apple beignets to subtle orange freshness. On the palate, that delicate freshness stands alongside the lush fruitiness, held so beautifully in balance by crisp acidity. Together with the lively mineral undertone, this gives this dry wine extra tension. Beautiful!
The grapes from the Clos des Capucins are hand-picked with extreme selection at optimal ripeness. In the vinification cellar, the bunches are pressed whole with extraordinary care, and spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with wild (grape-native) yeasts takes place in large, old oak vats. Bottling takes place after 8 months of aging. This entire process is carried out entirely according to strict biodynamic rules and regulations. Delicious as an aperitif, with oysters, lobster, seafood such as sole and turbot, turkey and Bresse chicken with mushrooms, sushi, and sashimi.

The 2022 Riesling Colette is very pure and saline on the elegant and stunningly precise nose. Round and generous on the palate, this is a full-bodied, saline and umami-tasting Riesling with lush but elegant fruit and a salivating finish. It's a stunningly refreshing 2022. 14% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024.
After the wet and generally challenging 2021 vintage, it could have been a big harvest in fall 2022. Fruit set was good, but right at the beginning of the growing season, mildew reduced the potential yield at Weinbach by 45%. But who knows what would have happened without that problem, because the vintage was soon to be very hot and also very dry, and those other grapes would only have suffered on the vines, especially on the barren, sun-exposed granite soils in the Schlossberg. Today, it must be said that the 2021s are doing better than perhaps expected, and the 2022s are doing so too, albeit for different reasons. The old vines survived the summer drought surprisingly well, and so the Faller family was delighted with a magnificent 2022 Schlossberg Riesling Ste Catherine. The 2021 was already outstanding yet different in nature. The Gewürztraminer from the limestone grand cru Furstentum is also of terrific quality, as is the Pinot Gris from the oolitic limestone pebbles in the Marckrain. Overall, the 2022s are richer and more powerful than the 2021s and have half a percentage point more alcohol by volume. However, this is not clumsy, as the wines also have an amazing foundation of salt, although the dryness was hardly likely to bring such complexity and structure to the grapes. However that happened, the white wines of both vintages are undoubtedly of excellent quality, with the 2021 showing less alcohol and a straighter, fresher and more mineral character.
When it comes to the reds from old vines and aged in wood for over two years, in particular the 2020 Pinot Noir Le Jardin aux Oiseux from the Furstentum and the 2020 Pinot Noir Altenbourg, Domaine Weinbach has been making great strides for a few years now. Is it because of the increasing proportion of whole grapes? This accentuates the freshness in 2021 and is what makes it possible in the 2020s, which were born in another warm and sunny vintage. The rather cool-grown 2021 Pinot Noir Les Terres du Prince from 50-year-old vines was even fermented 100% with whole clusters. It impresses with its fullness and austerity and shows excellent potential.

Beautifully ripe, powerful and concentrated, this medium- to full-bodied dry riesling also has an uplifting freshness. Stacks of orange, apricot and blanched almond aromas. I love the textural and mineral complexity in the long, complete finish that doesn’t want to end. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.

From: Alsace 2024: A Rainy Year of Svelte Beauties (Mar 2026)
The 2024 Riesling Les Bonnes Terres is the new name for Cuvée Colette, now named after the lieu-dit Gutenacker on deep layers of granitic sands at the foot of the Schlossberg. Tender, juicy pale pear is laced with lemon and comes with the stony verve of granite. This is taut and strait-laced, just like the Schlossberg, but with a touch more juiciness. A wonderful intro to this site. (Bone-dry)
- By Anne Krebiehl MW on January 2026
Eddy Leiber-Faller quipped, “Two thousand twenty-four was a season to forget, with wines to remember,” calling it “one of the most difficult growing seasons in a long time.” The domaine received close to 1,000 mm of rain, double the annual average, with considerable disease pressure. Winter had already been quite wet, and the season stayed that way. “The good thing was that we learned our lesson in 2021. This time around, we were a lot more prepared in terms of people and equipment. We managed to spray 38 hectares in one day. A couple of guys used hand sprayers, which meant we could spray even when we had a very narrow window between two rainy episodes. In the end, we did nine rounds of spraying. We ended up with about 30 hl/ha of yield. This is a little below the 20-year average of 33-34 hl/ha, but if you look at the fruit set, it would have been 45 hl/ha,” he said, adding, “The losses were down to sorting fruit at harvest rather than mildew.” Picking began on September 15 and finished on October 16.
The 2024 season may have been extremely difficult, but the Schlossberg Rieslings seem to have rejoiced in the abundance of water on this well-drained granitic slope. The 2023 Pinot Noirs are all elegant, rare, thoroughbred beauties. Bravo.

Domaine Weinbach, also known as Clos des Capucins, is not only one of the best Alsace domains, the refined and concentrated white wines are considered to be among the best in the world. The winery, which takes its name from the stream that flows through the vineyards on the spot, is located between the villages of Kaysersberg and Kientzheim and has a history that goes back a long way. In 860, the Abbey d'Etival obtained through a donation land that now belongs to the current vineyards of Domaine Weinbach.
A wall was built around a part of this plot in the early seventeenth century by Capuchin monks. This 5 hectare vineyard is the still existing Clos des Capucins. After the French Revolution, the vineyards and monastery were expropriated and sold by the state. Ultimately, it was the Faller brothers, two tanners from nearby Kaysersberg, who bought and refurbished the dilapidated abbey and its Clos des Capucins in 1898. Théo Faller continued the work of his father and uncle with great energy. He bought parts of surrounding Grand Cru vineyards such as Furstentumen, Schlossberg, Mambourg and Marckrain and brought the wines of Domaine Weinbach to an unprecedented level. With the third generation, the wines got even more refinement and depth, because from 1988 they first switched to organic viticulture and then in 2005 the choice was made to do the 28 hectares of vineyards and winemaking entirely according to biodynamic principles. The result is amazing; the white wines now have an unprecedented minerality, finesse and concentration. It is the result of natural preparations, acting according to the position of the moon and stars, drastic pruning at an early stage, hand picking grapes with optimal ripeness, with very low yields and preferably with the first effects of the noble rot and further a vinification with as little intervention as possible.
