Description
Anita Kuhnel was a former professional cyclist. With the same drive, she now dedicates all her energy to crafting Beaujolais wines at Domaine Anita. Anita uses only high-quality terroirs for this purpose. She uses these to create wines from the Gamay grape, which have already received high scores from renowned critics, including Robert Parker, James Suckling, and Wine Enthusiast. Suckling (99/100) writes about the 2022 vintage: " They build and build to an almost overwhelming climax in the fabulously long and impeccably balanced finish ."
The Gamay grapes for this Anita Moulin-à-Vent La Rochelle come from the lieu-dit 'La Rochelle' in the Moulin-à-Vent appellation. This vineyard is situated on pink granite soil, at an altitude of 240 meters, and faces south/southeast. The vines are 50 years old. The grapes are hand-picked and selected in the vineyard. 100% of the grapes are destemmed and first cold-soaked for four days. Fermentation then begins, with the 'cap' (the skins that float to the surface) pressed down daily to extract more flavor and tannins. Fermentation lasts for 24 days. After fermentation, the wine is aged for six months in a combination of oak barrels and cement tanks. In the glass, the Anita Moulin-à-Vent La Rochelle is ruby red with a purple glow. On the nose, this delightful wine has intense notes of black cherries, dried flowers, black pepper, and earth. On the palate, it's concentrated and rich, with very juicy acidity, soft tannins, and a strong mineral finish. Delicious with roast venison. Very limited.
- This Beaujolais masterpiece is so concentrated and so pure, with lush, velvety sensuality that reminds me of great Pomerol. But there's also almost breathtaking brightness, thanks to the magical combination of gamay and granite. Great mineral freshness at the ripe yet pristine finish." - James Suckling
- This wine comes from one of the top vineyards in Moulin-à-Vent. With bold structure and a strong mineral texture from the pink granite soil, the wine has aging potential. The black fruits are still young and need to mature further. Drink from 2024." - Wine Enthusiast
- Domaine Anita's 2018 Moulin-à-Vent La Rochelle reveals a rich bouquet of cherries and plum preserve, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy palate bursting with dark fruit that largely conceals its youthfully chewy tannins." - 91 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate on the 2018 vintage
- Dark berry and damson fruit aromas on the nose. Quite a lot of chewiness on the palate, ripe and concentrated. Drinking Window 2021 - 2028" - 90 points, Decanter about the 2019 vintage
- Lurid ruby. Candied red and blue fruit and floral pastille scents are complicated by hints of violet and licorice. Sappy black raspberry and blueberry flavors blend power and finesse and take on a spicy nuance with air. Closes long, broad and gently sweet, with building tannins and an echo of ripe blue fruit." - 90 points, Vinous about the 2018 vintage

Made from 100% destemmed fruit and aged for 11 months in barrels (10% new), the 2023 Moulin-à-Vent La Rochelle is suave on the palate, layered with complex notes of stewed black cherries, licorice, black pepper, confit orange and spice. Full-bodied, the wine opens with a rounded, velvety profile that gracefully tapers, shaped by well-integrated, smooth-coated tannins, ascending toward a refined, complete finish. This is another beautiful effort from Anita.
Domaine Anita was founded in 2015 by Anita Neveu after a stint in the professional cycling world led her to the rolling hills of Beaujolais. Situated in Chénas, the domaine covers 15 hectares in Moulin à Vent, Morgon, Chénas, Fleurie, Beaujolais and Beaujolais-Villages. The domaine's ethos is dedicated to showcasing the distinctive personalities of each parcel, making 12 cuvées in total. The vineyards are planted with high-density spacings, up to 10,000 vines per hectare, and boast mostly old vines. The work in the vineyard is sustainable and non-dogmatic, using treatments only when necessary, and will focus on soil vitality in hopes of increasing the organic matter and water-holding capacity in the future. Anita opts to pick her grapes later than the average, with the stylistic goal of achieving total ripeness, especially in the stems and seeds. In the cellar, the grapes are destemmed according to the characteristics of the parcel and are vinified in non-coated cement tanks with daily punch-downs. Aging takes place in used barrels and cement, lasting up to eight months.
Anita's true strength lies in her ability to harness the sumptuousness of the Gamay grape while avoiding any tendency toward cloying density.
While the 2022s exhibited an undeniable opulence, the 2023s distinguish themselves through their balance; they are still generous, yet with greater transparency in expressing the nuances of their respective terroirs. Notably, this vintage offers a deeper insight into the wines’ textural intricacies. For those who appreciate Gamay with splendor, most of these offerings are well-suited for enjoyment within the next few years. However, their structural integrity and overall builds ensure they are equally capable of withstanding extended aging.

Hold onto your hat. This is an extraordinarily seductive expression of Moulin-a-Vent. Dense and compact but also incredibly plush and dynamic, it makes a huge statement, a bit like meeting the goddess of black cherries. Interlocking fine tannins and remarkable minerality in the dazzling, almost endless finish. From totally destemmed fruit. Cold maceration for four days. Long fermentation. Aged 11 months in used Burgundian barrels. Drink or hold.

From: Buy Some, Try Some: Beaujolais 2022-2024 (Apr 2025)
The 2023 Moulin-à-Vent La Rochelle was very reduced on the nose, although there are black plummy fruit aromas coiled up here. The palate is plush and luxurious. Its acidity counters the richness of the 2023 acts more like a 2022! Kirsch and blood orange notes arise toward the finish as it gradually fans out. This is an intense Gamay that requires a couple of years in bottle.

With this she makes wines from the Gamay grape that has already received several high scores from renowned critics, including Robert Parker, James Suckling and Wine Enthusiast.
Anita Kuhnel will retire from cycling in 2015 and will make it her mission to create top Beaujolais. She buys carefully selected terroirs in the crus Moulin-à-Vent, Morgon, Chénas and Fleurie. The de-stalking of grapes and the use of wood give extra depth to her wines. Sulfite use is kept to a minimum. Her wines are particularly rich, concentrated wines that live up to the full potential of Gamay and also have a very good aging potential. Chénas is one of the smallest crus of Beaujolais and therefore a Beaujolais not often seen. The soils contain a lot of granite, which causes the vines to root more deeply. That gives small, concentrated grapes with a lot of taste. Morgon is one of the richest Beaujolais styles. The soils consist of granite and schist, of volcanic origin. With a lot of iron in the soil, the wines have more structure and earthy notes. What is exceptional about Moulin-à-Vent is the high amount of manganese in the granite soils. This manganese limits the yield, making the wines extra concentrated and deeper in taste, with more tannins. It is the fullest of all Beaujolais crus, and can also age very well. In Fleurie, Anita makes the Fleurie Poncié, which stands out for its strong floral, aromatic character.
