Quite 2023 by Veronica Ortega is an accessible yet characterful red wine from Bierzo, based on old Mencía vines supplemented with small quantities of local grapes such as Doña Blanca, Palomino, and Alicante Bouschet. Although it is the estate's entry-level cuvée, this wine clearly displays Ortega's signature: freshness, precision, and a clear origin. The wine is light-footed and juicy, yet possesses sufficient structure and depth to remain interesting.

Origin and region

Veronica Ortega works from Bierzo with a clear focus on old vineyards and local grape varieties. After gaining experience in Burgundy and Priorat, among others, she developed her own style, aimed at finesse and balance.

Quite comes from Valtuille de Abajo, one of the most renowned villages in Bierzo. The vineyards are spread across various plots with vines approximately 90 to 100 years old. These old vines ensure low yields and natural concentration.

The soils consist of a mix of clay and sand, with many pebbles and stones such as quartzite and slate. This type of soil, typical of the Bierzo valley, contributes to the combination of ripe fruit and a distinct mineral undertone. The climate, with warm days and cool nights, ensures a good balance between ripeness and freshness.

Grapes

The base of Quite is Mencía, Bierzo's main red grape. This is complemented by small quantities of other grapes from the old vineyards, including Doña Blanca, Palomino, and Alicante Bouschet. These types of field blends add extra complexity and nuance to the wine.

Mencía is known for its fresh red fruit, floral notes, and relatively light structure. In Quite, that character comes clearly to the fore, with an emphasis on juiciness and drinkability.

Vinification

The grapes are largely destemmed, with approximately 15% whole bunches depending on the plot. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, with a deliberate choice for gentle extraction and a short maceration of about 5 to 7 days. As a result, the wine remains light and elegant in style.

After fermentation, the wine ages in two phases. First, approximately 10 months in truncated conical French oak barrels, followed by another 6 months in larger 500-liter vats. This longer aging over two winters results in a more integrated structure and a smoother texture in the final wine.

Taste profile and style

Quite 2023 is a fresh, fruit-driven, and accessible Bierzo. The aroma is dominated by notes of red fruit such as cherry and raspberry, complemented by blue flowers and a light hint of licorice.

On the palate, the wine is smooth and juicy, with a light, elegant structure. The acidity provides liveliness, while the tannins remain soft and fine. The wine has a lean, energetic build and a fresh finish, making it easy to drink without becoming simple.

The combination of fruit, freshness, and a subtle mineral undertone makes this a wine that is both immediately appealing and clearly expresses its origin.

Food and wine pairings

Quite 2023 is very versatile at the table. Its fresh and light style makes it suitable for dishes that are not too heavy.
