How does this wine taste?
How full and heavy the wine feels in your mouth, like the difference between skimmed milk and cream. More alcohol, sugar and oak ageing make a wine fuller.
The drying, grippy feel on your gums and tongue, as with strong tea. It comes from the skins and seeds of black grapes and from oak, and softens with age.
How much sugar you taste, from dry to sweet. Fruity is not the same as sweet: a dry wine can taste of ripe fruit.
How fresh and juicy the wine is: acidity makes your mouth water. High acidity tastes lively and refreshing, low acidity soft and round.

Log inVillaggio is a wine made from 100% Sangiovese sourced from the younger vineyards of Podere Forte. The vineyards are located in southwestern Tuscany at an altitude of 320–480 meters above sea level. The soil consists of slate with a high clay content and is cultivated organically and biodynamically. The grapes are harvested by hand and transported in small 15 kg crates to prevent damage. This is followed by careful selection, ensuring that only the best bunches proceed to the cellar. The wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation in wood, using indigenous yeasts. Subsequently, the wine ages for 14 to 16 months in French oak barrels and matures for a further 6 to 8 months in the bottle before being released onto the market.
In the glass, this Podere Forte Rocca d'Orcia Villaggio has a beautiful ruby red color. The nose features typical Sangiovese: aromas such as sour cherries, but also wild roses, thyme, balsamic, and cedar. On the palate, the wine is very pleasant and highly drinkable, full and juicy in taste with a crisp freshness, pleasant tannins, and a lingering finish. This wine is delicious with Tuscan cuisine, naturally, for example with pappardelle with ragù. It is also wonderful with the classic bistecca fiorentina.
Podere Forte is a winery and farm unlike any other in Italy. Old and modern. Traditional and futuristic. Managed according to both scientific criteria and biodynamic principles. Driven by a perfect and self-sufficient ecosystem that not only preserves the existing state but improves it. A farm – Podere – where diversity is harmonized and united in a single principle. Where quality, at any cost, goes hand in hand with complete respect for the environment, the first, original, and ultimately the only protagonist of that excellence we seek with determination and passion. The 2023 Orcia Sangiovese Villaggio is a deep ruby hue. It opens with an inviting bouquet of crushed black cherries and raspberries, sweet sage and cedary spice. It is silken and serene, with vibrant acidity that lifts its ripe dark red fruit as an air of lavender arches across the palate. The wine finishes long and potent yet fresh, leaving a licorice tinge that lingers on and on. Most producers would be over the moon to have a wine of this quality as their entry-level bottle.
- By Eric Guido on April 2026
The 2020s at Podere Forte are just a baby step behind the 2019s and give their neighbors in Montalcino and Montepulciano a run for their money. The Val d’Orcia is an expansive and complex area, with large tracts of land that are often considered unsuitable for fine wine. Podere Forte challenges that notion. At over 500 meters in elevation, the vineyards benefit from a high-altitude cooling effect that shapes a distinct structure and aromatic profile in the wines. Thick, lush forests surround the property to create a unique micro-ecosystem. Podere Forte strictly adheres to biodynamic and organic principles and promotes biodiversity via grain production, olive cultivation and livestock. Their two single-vineyard wines, the Vigna Anfiteatro and Vigna Melo, are varietal Sangioveses that compete with Montalcino’s best. Podere Forte also produces a fantastic varietal Cabernet Franc built for the cellar, the Guardiavigna (current vintage 2021). Finally, the entry-level Villaggio (Sangiovese) provides immediate pleasure in a beautifully balanced package.
