The name Maire has been associated with the Jura since 1632. Those who travel regularly through eastern France are likely familiar with the plaques on houses reading 'Henri Maire, Vin Fou'. Henri took over approximately 2.5 hectares of vineyard in 1939. He expanded this to no less than 300 hectares, then about a quarter of the total Jura vineyards, spread across five estates. He single-handedly ensured the revival of the Jura as a wine region. For several years now, the company has been in the hands of another family: Boisset. Currently, the total acreage is 225 hectares, and Boisset is investing heavily in vineyards and cellars. The quality, which had declined somewhat in the first 15 years of this century, has now rapidly improved again. And this at relatively good prices for the Jura.

Given the scarcity, but certainly also the high prices in Burgundy, we can definitely advise you to include wines from the Jura, and certainly from Henri Maire, in your selection. A fraction of the price of a Burgundy of outstanding quality.

This Pinot Noir from the Côtes du Jura appellation by Domaine Henri Maire has a typical bright, ruby red color befitting a 'Burgundy-style' Pinot Noir. The aroma reveals the fruit of ripe strawberries and plums. The palate starts luscious and ripe, followed by a pleasant freshness. Remarkably soft tannin structure and a light smokiness. A serious style of Pinot Noir.

Everything that is typically Jura is produced here: grapes such as Savagnin and Chardonnay for white and Trousseau and Pinot noir for red in various appellations such as Côtes de Jura, Arbois and Château Chalon. And styles such as Crémant de Jura, Savagnin non oullié (aged under a natural yeast membrane) and Vin Jaune (at least more than 6 years under such a membrane). With the scarcity but also the high prices, the Jura en Maire is certainly a winery to include in your selection. A fraction of the price with excellent quality
