Incredible what a wine for this price. This Pruno from Finca Villacreces is still young but has a lot of potential for the coming years. Time and again, this beautiful wine scores very highly with the international wine press, and Finca Villacreces has proven that they can produce consistent quality year after year. In his review, Parker speaks of: "WOW - normally a wine like this costs between 75-150 dollars!!!" and speaks of "over-delivering".
Finca Villacreces is situated in an exceptional location in the Ribera del Duero, on the so-called “Milla de Oro” – the golden mile of the region. The estate borders directly on none other than Vega Sicilia, the most renowned winery in Spain. World-famous winemaker Peter Sisseck also used grapes from Villacreces in the past for his iconic Pingus wine. This location underscores the enormous quality potential of the Villacreces terroir. Since 2004, it has been part of the Artevino group of the Antón family, known from Rioja. The vineyards have been organically certified since 2017, and the entire range followed in 2021. They work with respect for nature and a focus on origin. You can find more information in the Winery tab.
Origin and terroir
The grapes for Pruno come from various plots within Ribera del Duero, sourced from three estates: Pinos Claros, Villacreces, and Valdelascuevas. The vineyards are situated at high altitudes and benefit from large temperature differences between day and night. The soils consist of sand, clay, and calcareous sublayers. This combination ensures ripe fruit, but also freshness and structure in the wine.
Grapes and vineyard management
The wine consists primarily of Tempranillo, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Merlot. The grapes come from vines planted between 1975 and 2001. Through organic cultivation and careful vineyard management, the balance between ripeness and freshness is maintained. Yields are controlled to achieve sufficient concentration without losing the character of the fruit.
Vinification and aging
After the harvest, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel with selected, indigenous yeasts. This ensures a pure expression of the fruit. The wine then ages for approximately 12 months in oak barrels of various sizes, a small portion of which are new. During this period, sur lie aging also takes place, contributing to roundness and structure without overpowering the fruit.
Color, smell and taste
Deep ruby red in color. The aroma features ripe red and black fruit, with subtle spicy notes and light oak influence. On the palate, juicy and accessible, with fresh acidity and fine tannins. The fruit takes center stage, supported by a soft structure and an elegant finish.
Style and character
Pruno is known for its balance between fruit and structure. The wine is accessible and smooth, yet has enough depth to remain interesting. The combination of ripe fruit, fresh acidity, and light oak influence makes this a modern style Ribera del Duero.

The juicy and fruit-driven 2023 Pruno was produced with 94% Tempranillo, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Merlot from different parts of their vineyards that were planted between 1975 and 2001. It fermented in stainless steel with yeasts they have isolated and some neutral ones and matured for 12 months in 225- and 500-liter barrels, 20% of them new. It has contained ripeness and good freshness and balance, and it's clean and juicy, with fine and polished tannins, 14.35% alcohol, a pH of 3.75 and 5.7 grams of acidity. 621,000 bottles, 8,000 magnums and 100 double magnums produced. It was bottled in March 2025.
Finca Villacreces was one of the wineries created in Ribera del Duero in the mid-1990s that got famous for its proximity to Vega Sicilia and its relationship to Peter "Ping" Sisseck, who allegedly lent them a hand to produce their wines. It was purchased by the Antón family from Izadi in Rioja in 2004 and added to their Artevino group of wineries. They certified the vineyards in organic in 2017, now a total of 157 hectares, and all the wines in 2021. Given the heat and drought of 2022, they implemented some changes to be able to harvest earlier and make each wine from their origin, as they have three estates—Pinos Claros, Villacreces and Valdelascuevas. They also reduced the amount of new oak in the wines, co-fermenting with some white grapes and using some full clusters.
There's a new wine from 2022, sourced from their Valdelascuevas estate called Creta—a 9.5-hectare plot located on the moorland directly opposite Finca Villacreces on a hillside at an altitude of 800 meters, planted on limestone-rich soil (45%), hence the name "Creta," which means "limestone" in Latin. And finally, in 2025 they are planting a further nine hectares in Valdelascuevas with a massal selection that will go to Creta in the future. Their production was 721,000 bottles in 2023.

Nice fruit here, showing fresh red plums, red cherries and roasted spices. Tannins are chewy but also tense with a medium-bodied center palate and a pretty lengthy, fruit-expressive finish. Good midpalate fluidity. 94% tempranillo, 4% cabernet sauvignon and 2% merlot. Drinkable now but better with one or two more years.

The winery Finca Villacreces is located in a beautiful area. The winery is located right next to Duero, next to the well-known Vega Sicilia. The winery has 115 hectares of estate, of which 60 hectares are vineyards. The 60 hectares of vineyards are spread over 15 different places, all of which contribute to the quality of these delicious wines. Because the area is very sandy and the location of the vineyards is high, it is not easy to get certain grapes ripe. However, the pine trees that are more than 100 years old do cooperate for the grapes that are difficult to ripen.
The climate is extremely different, the temperature can rise to 40 degrees, but also drop to 10 degrees below zero. The nearby river; de Duero, ensures that the grapes survive the warm climate. Finca Villacreses is a very popular winery partly because of the Pruno wine which offers an unprecedented beautiful glass of wine for the money. The fact that it has been repeatedly named best value wine by the Wine Advocate naturally also helps. Other highly recommended wines are the Finca Villacres wine and the cult wine Nebro (the latter two are only made in good years).
The Finca Villacreces is an old abbey located on the “Golden Mile” along the river Duero in the designation of origin Ribera del Duero in Spain.
THE TERROIR: The total area of the estate is 115 hectares, of which 60 hectares are vineyards. This 60 hectare is spread over 15 different plots, all of which contribute to the quality of the wines in this impressive domain. The sandy soil and the high location of the vineyards do not make it easier to ripen the planted grapes tinta del païs (tempranillo), merlot and cabernet sauvignon. The more than 100 years old pine trees do contribute to a microclimate in which the grapes feel good and the harvests are of an exceptionally high level in recent years.
FROM STICK TO HARVEST: Due to the high location, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in particular have a very hard time ripening. In recent years, a lot has been invested in the vineyards: drip irrigation, the sticks are tied up higher to get more leaf and so better photosynthesis and the young plantings of the newest vineyards are already producing unprecedented quality fruit.
FROM HARVEST TO WINE: Only at optimal maturity are grapes harvested here, resulting in beautifully concentrated wines with a fine acidity. All Finca Villacreces wines undergo malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels. Depending on the wine, the aging is determined on casks. Of course, the harvest year also influences this and there is a deviation from the standard. Pruno is aged for 12 months, Reserva for 16 months and Nebro for 18 months. After bottling, the bottles remain in the cellar for a long time before being put on the market. This is shorter for the Pruno than for the other wines.
