2023 Othello Napa Valley is the perfect introduction to the world of Dominus Estate. Hailing from the same historic Napanook Vineyard and made by the same team led by Christian Moueix, Othello combines the refined signature of Dominus with a more accessible and fruit-driven character. A wine that offers great drinking pleasure even when young, while simultaneously showcasing the quality and terroir of one of Napa Valley's most iconic estates.
Dominus Estate
Dominus Estate is located on the historic Napanook Vineyard in Yountville, one of the oldest and most prestigious vineyards in Napa Valley. Since 1983, the estate has been owned by Christian Moueix, known worldwide as the owner of Château Petrus in Pomerol. His vision was clear from the start: to create a Californian wine with the finesse, balance, and terroir expression that characterize the great Bordeaux wines.
The vineyards are cultivated organically and entirely dry, allowing the vines to root deep in the soil. Low yields, strict selection, and careful vinification ensure that Othello follows the same quality philosophy as the prestigious Dominus Grand Vin.

Othello: the most accessible expression of Dominus
Othello comes from the front plots of the Napanook Vineyard, close to Highway 29. The soils here contain relatively high levels of clay and silt, which distinguishes the wine through its refined structure, juicy fruit expression, and early accessibility. Among the three wines of Dominus, Othello represents the most elegant and immediately drinkable interpretation of the unique terroir.
The 2023 volume
The winter of 2023 brought exceptionally heavy rainfall, fully replenishing water reserves. The growing season began later than normal, followed by a cool summer without extreme heat. This allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, with a perfect balance between ripe fruit, fresh acidity, and refined tannins. The harvest took place between October 7 and 18.
It is noteworthy that Dominus chose not to release any wine from the 2022 vintage at all, as it did not meet the estate's exceptionally high quality standards. The 2023 once again confirms the uncompromising approach for which Dominus is renowned worldwide.
Blending and vinification
The 2023 Othello consists of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Petit Verdot. Of the three Dominus wines, Othello receives the lowest proportion of new French oak, approximately 15 to 20%. As a result, the fruit remains central, creating a wine of great purity, elegance, and immediate charm.
Scent, taste and character
The nose opens with aromas of red cherries, cassis, plums, and pomegranate, followed by notes of cedarwood, orange peel, sandalwood, spices, and a subtle earthy touch. The fragrance is refined and inviting, with a beautiful balance between fruit and spiciness.
On the palate, Othello is silky smooth and juicy, with a core of ripe red and black fruit, supported by fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins. Flavors of red berries, dark plums, spices, cedar, and a hint of cranberry create a lively and elegant whole.
The finish is long, fresh, and harmonious, with a beautiful combination of fruit, spices, and mineral tension. Othello offers great accessibility, yet possesses sufficient structure to continue developing positively for years to come.
Professional reviews
The 2023 Othello is praised by the international wine press for its balance and drinkability. James Suckling awards the wine 94 points and commends the juicy fruit expression, purity, and refined structure. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate highlights the silky texture and harmonious build, while Antonio Galloni describes Othello as one of the most attractive entry-level wines from Napa Valley, offering exceptional value for money.
Drinking window and food and wine pairings
The 2023 Othello is immediately accessible and will develop beautifully between 2026 and 2040.
Preferably serve the wine at 16 to 18°C. When young, it comes into its own perfectly after decanting for about an hour.
Delicious with grilled beef, sirloin, quality beef burgers, lamb, roasted vegetables, mushroom pasta, barbecue dishes, and aged cheeses.

Coming primarily from the front of the property, closest to Highway 29, the 2023 Othello Red Wine sees the least new oak of the three wines emanating from the Dominus vineyard, only 15% to 20%. This blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Petit Verdot offers up a pleasant mix of cherries, pomegranate and cassis, plus subtle herbal notes and a hint of orange zest on the nose, while the medium- to full-bodied palate is silky-textured, ending on a tart, cranberry-ish note.
Director of Viticulture and Winemaking Tod Mostero is feeling better than the last time I saw him, when he had made the decision not to release any 2022s from the property's dry-farmed vineyard. Looking at the 2023s, Mostero pointed out that the weather strongly influenced the outcome, starting with plentiful winter rains—16 inches in January, versus a historical average of five inches. February was normal, but then March again saw a big difference—12 inches versus an average of five inches. Budbreak was correspondingly delayed, not taking place until April 12. "Development was consistently two weeks late over the course of the season," he said, while also noting that summer into fall was moderate (no temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit were recorded during August) and dry, allowing ample hang time and full ripening. Harvest took place from October 7 through October 18.
Winemaking includes the use of an optical sorter, with fermentations starting at 15 degrees Celsius and ramping up to 30 degrees Celsius before cooling down as the yeast activity decreases. The wines are racked to tank, where they undergo malolactic fermentation prior to being run to barrel. Lots are kept separate for approximately nine months, with preliminary blending taking place the summer following harvest.
The three wines reviewed here roughly represent three different sectors of the vineyard. Othello (2,000 cases) is drawn from the front portion of the property—between the winery and Highway 29—where the soils have the highest proportion of silt and clay. Napanook (3,500 cases) derives from the blocks just behind the winery, while Dominus (7,000 cases) comes from the stoniest blocks furthest from Highway 29, pushed up against the Mayacamas. All three wines were scheduled to be released in spring 2026.

The 2023 Othello is a tasty entry-level bottling from the front blocks on the property, those on either side of Hopper Creek. Juicy dark red fruit, cinnamon, new leather and cedar are pushed forward in this delicious, effortless Cabernet Sauvignon. Best of all, this should be a fabulous value, too.

Dominus Estate, owned by famed winemaker and CEO Christian Moueix (also owner of Pétrus, Trotanoy, La Fleur-Petrus, Hosanna, among others), is part of the Napanook Historical Landmark and widely regarded as one of the oldest vineyards (1836) of Napa Valley, California. The estate was bought in 1946 by the legendary winemaker and visionary John Daniels, and passed to his daughters in 1970.
In 1982, they entered into a partnership with Christian Moueix, which resulted in Dominus Estate. Moueix bought all the shares in 1995 and is therefore now the sole owner. The first Dominus wine appeared in 1983 and immediately gained international attention thanks to the influence of Moueix.
Dominus Estate produces a second wine, Napanook, first marketed in 1996, and a third called “Othello”, an entry-level wine. The domain covers 44 hectares, divided into 14 plots with mainly Cabernet Sauvignon (87%). However, it also says some petit verdot and cabernet franc. The merlot grape has not been used for the “Grand Vin” since 2002, but is still occasionally used in the Napanook wines. The winery, which was built in 1996, is made of stones held together with metal wire and represents the terroir of the vineyard. The architectural style is completely in harmony with the landscape and protects against the heat during the day and the cold at night.
The vineyard's origins at the Napa Valley cult winery Dominus Estate date back to 1836, when it was known as the Napanook Vineyard. This makes it one of the oldest vineyards in California, and therefore also in the United States. Napanook later became part of the Inglenook winery, which in turn became the property of California wine pioneer John Daniel in 1946. After his death, his daughters Robin Lail and Marcia Smith inherited the 44-hectare Napanook vineyard in 1982 and asked oenologist Christian Moueix to partner with them. At the time, Christian Moueix was director and winemaker responsible for top Bordeaux wine estates such as Petrus, Château Trotanoy and Château La Fleur-Pétrus. With the first vintage 1983 of this new Californian
winery Christian Moueix chose the name Dominus Estate. The fact that Christian Moueix has pledged his heart to Dominus Estate, of which he has been the sole owner since 1995, is apparent from his total dedication and commitment to achieve the ultimate result. Dominus is a wine with a clear Bordeaux aristocracy with the use of grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
