Domaine Weinbach Winery

Domaine Weinbach is one of the most renowned wineries in Alsace. The estate is situated at the foot of the Schlossberg Grand Cru in Kaysersberg and has been managed by the Faller family for generations. The name Weinbach literally means "wine stream," referring to the small brook that runs alongside the historic estate.

The heart of the estate is the walled vineyard Clos des Capucins , situated directly around the former Capuchin monastery where the winery has its origins. The Weinbach family has been working according to organic and biodynamic principles for years to allow the terroir to express itself as purely as possible. This results in wines of great precision, tension, and a distinct sense of origin.

2023 Domaine Weinbach Pinot Gris Clos des Capucins BIO

The Pinot Gris Clos des Capucins is one of the characterful wines from Domaine Weinbach. The grapes come from the historic Clos des Capucins vineyard surrounding the estate. In 2023, a special vinification process was applied in which the wine underwent a month of skin contact, resulting in extra structure and aromatic complexity.

Fermentation took place without the addition of sulfites, and the wine was made with minimal intervention. This approach yields a pure and expressive interpretation of Pinot Gris, in which fruit, texture, and minerality come together beautifully.

Terroir and grape

The Clos des Capucins vineyard is situated on calcareous soils typical of the region around Kaysersberg. Pinot Gris feels particularly at home here, producing wines with depth, ripe fruit, and a distinct mineral tension. The relatively cool climate of Alsace ensures that the natural freshness is preserved.

Vinification

For the 2023 vintage, a vinification process with extended skin maceration of approximately one month was chosen. The grapes were handled gently and fermented without the addition of sulfites. After maceration, the wine aged further to develop texture and complexity while retaining freshness.

Color, smell and taste

In the glass, the wine displays a deep golden yellow color. On the nose, aromas of dark berries, cassis, and wild fruits, complemented by floral notes and subtle spiciness.

On the palate, medium to full-bodied with a satiny texture. The wine has distinct layering and texture, supported by fine tannins and fresh minerality. The finish is long, clean, and elegant.

Domaine Weinbach, also known as Clos des Capucins, is not only one of the best Alsace domains, the refined and concentrated white wines are considered to be among the best in the world. The winery, which takes its name from the stream that flows through the vineyards on the spot, is located between the villages of Kaysersberg and Kientzheim and has a history that goes back a long way. In 860, the Abbey d'Etival obtained through a donation land that now belongs to the current vineyards of Domaine Weinbach.

A wall was built around a part of this plot in the early seventeenth century by Capuchin monks. This 5 hectare vineyard is the still existing Clos des Capucins. After the French Revolution, the vineyards and monastery were expropriated and sold by the state. Ultimately, it was the Faller brothers, two tanners from nearby Kaysersberg, who bought and refurbished the dilapidated abbey and its Clos des Capucins in 1898. Théo Faller continued the work of his father and uncle with great energy. He bought parts of surrounding Grand Cru vineyards such as Furstentumen, Schlossberg, Mambourg and Marckrain and brought the wines of Domaine Weinbach to an unprecedented level. With the third generation, the wines got even more refinement and depth, because from 1988 they first switched to organic viticulture and then in 2005 the choice was made to do the 28 hectares of vineyards and winemaking entirely according to biodynamic principles. The result is amazing; the white wines now have an unprecedented minerality, finesse and concentration. It is the result of natural preparations, acting according to the position of the moon and stars, drastic pruning at an early stage, hand picking grapes with optimal ripeness, with very low yields and preferably with the first effects of the noble rot and further a vinification with as little intervention as possible.
