Description

A vintage with all the characteristics of the great years. The freshness and balance of the vintage are combined with dazzling fruit and a velvety texture. This vintage was characterized by quite extreme weather conditions. The spring was particularly wet,
but mild weather at the end of May-beginning of June ensured good flowering. July brought two heat waves, both followed by favorable rain. The summer was sunny with a classic Bordeaux August. Thanks to a fantastic late season, the tannins of the Cabernets were able to continue to ripen and reach optimal ripeness. The white wines present exceptional quality. The cool August period produced excellently balanced grapes that beautifully emphasize the aromatic profiles.
Malartic white wines have traditionally been known as great cellaring wines, developing a complex aromatic palette and excellent minerality over the years. They are pure, precise, well-structured wines, with a rich range of aromas and flavors, and a certain roundness accompanied by a wonderful liveliness. Vintage after vintage they are characterized by balance and elegance. They are among the jewels of Bordeaux.
The Château Malartic-Lagravière Pessac-Léognan Blanc (Grand Cru Classé de Graves) is a blend of Sauvignon 80% and Sémillon 20% which has been aged sur lie in oak for 14 months. The freshness and balance of this vintage combined with the brilliance of the fruit and velvety texture with ample but complex tannin structure shows reflects Malartic's true signature. Aromas of grilled pineapple, cloves, lemon peel, lime and mango. White pepper, crushed stone and also some cedar. It is medium to full-bodied with bright acidity. Layered and very long. Seriously white. Needs time to open to show its true potential Drink from 2026. The Malartic-Lagravière blanc and Rouge are among the absolute standout of the vintage - not only within Pessac-Léognan do these wines stand out, but they are among the best of Bordeaux 2023 in their price range!

2021 Malartic Lagravière Blanc
RP (90-93)
The 2021 Malartic Lagravière Blanc shows promise, bursting with aromas of lime zest, fresh mint, grapefruit and pastry cream. Medium to full-bodied, chiseled and nicely concentrated, it's a taut, intensely flavored wine that concludes with a long, saline finish.
An estate on the rise, with a new approach to viticulture, the fruit of over a decade's work, is delivering smaller grapes, lower pHs and greater concentration at Malartic Lagravière; and now, since 2019, Eric Boissenot's input as consultant is privileging balance and structural finesse over extraction and impact. These 2021s, fine successes in a challenging year, are testament to the promise of this new direction.

The 2020 Malartic Lagraviere Blanc leaps from the glass with invigorating notes of lime blossoms, lemon meringue pie and green mango, followed by hints of wet slate, green apples and wild sage. The medium-bodied palate has a racy backbone and loads of citrus and mineral layers, finishing with a peppery kick.
The tentative blend is 71.8% Sauvignon and 28.2% Sémillon. Only 30% of the total production will be bottled as grand vin, representing just 7,500 bottles. The alcohol is 14% this year.
The estate has chosen a new bottle for the grand cru and second vin, highlighted by an engraved ship, the symbol of the estate. The 2020 vintage will be the first one in this brand-new bottle.

From: Enticingly Fallible: Bordeaux 2021 En Primeur (May 2022)
The 2021 Malartic-Lagravière Blanc was picked from 15 to 24 September with less Sémillon due to frost (11%) and matured in 50% new oak. Clean and precise on the nose, this unfurls nicely in the glass, taut and mineral-driven. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, lively and beautifully balanced, just the right amount of salinity with a cohesive and lingering finish. This is an outstanding white Pessac-Léognan.

Ch. Malartic Lagravière, together with Ch. Smith Haut Lafitte, Dom. de Chevalier and Ch. Haut Bailly is one of the leaders in the Pessac Léognan appellation. Thanks to the Belgian owner Alfred-Alexandre Bonnie, who invested immensely, and the advice of Michel Rolland, the cru has improved spectacularly over the last 5 years. The magnificent terroir located in the heart of Léognan naturally also plays a major role.
