A Chinese wine with French style and an Austrian signature: that is what makes this Blanc de Noir so special.

Chateau Changyu Moser and the collaboration with Lenz Moser

Chateau Changyu Moser is located in Ningxia, China's most famous wine region. Changyu began producing wine here in the 19th century. When Austrian winemaker Lenz Moser came on board, the project gained international momentum. Together, they built a bridge between European expertise and the unique conditions of the Gobi Desert and the Helan Mountains. The result is a style that is both classic and surprisingly modern.

Cabernet Sauvignon as the basis for Blanc de Noir

What makes this wine so interesting is that it's made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon. Normally, this grape produces powerful red wines, but here a Blanc de Noir was deliberately chosen. This means the blue skins have brief contact with the juice, after which they are immediately removed. This results in a white wine that still retains the structure and tension of Cabernet. In this case, the wine is also partially aged in barriques, which adds a subtle oak note.

Ningxia Vineyards

The vineyards are situated at an altitude of around 1,200 meters, where days are hot and nights cool. This large temperature difference keeps the grapes fresh and ensures good acidity. The soil consists primarily of sand and gravel, ideal for well-drained vineyards. The combination of altitude, sunlight, and dry air makes Ningxia perfect for quality viticulture. Increasingly, international critics are viewing this region as the heart of the Chinese wine revolution.

The Blanc de Noir Barrique process

At harvest, the grapes are gently pressed. The juice is separated from the skins almost immediately to avoid color and tannin. Fermentation follows, much like that of white wine. For this 2023 release, a portion of the wine is aged in barriques. This adds depth and a light creaminess, without sacrificing the fresh character. It's a subtle interplay of fruit, oak, and tension.

Flavor profile of the 2023 Changyu Moser Cabernet Sauvignon Blanc de Noir Barrique

The wine opens with aromas of white peach, citrus, and a hint of red berry. The latter is a reminder that it comes from a blue grape. On the palate, it feels lively, with crisp acidity and a fine texture. The oak adds a soft vanilla note and a touch of roundness. It's a wine that's both fresh and complex, making it a versatile dining companion. Think of shellfish, but also chicken dishes or refined Asian cuisine.

Château Changyu Moser XV or in good Chinese 张裕摩塞尔十五世酒庄 is without a doubt the most famous Chinese Winery. It is the very first Winery in China founded in 1892 by Zhang Bishi, an overseas Chinese diplomat.

He decided to start his pioneering winery in Yantai and named it "Zhang Yu Wine Company". He imported more than 500,000 vines from the US and Europe, paving the way for modern Chinese wine production, supported by an Austrian viticulturist: August Wilhelm Baron von Babo. After more than 120 years of growth, CHANGYU today is a group with international shareholders such as ILLVA (Italy, Amaretto di Saronno) and IFC (International Finance Corporation, USA), which owns and operates eight chateaux and wineries throughout China. Its portfolio includes wine, brandy, sparkling wine and healthy liqueur and is well received in more than 20 countries. CHANGYU is also the largest Chinese wine producer with a large market share.

In 2015, Lenz founded LENZ M. MOSER PROJECTS with the clear goal of choosing only very few, but very special projects in the new wine world and to inspire his partners with his 30 years of experience and know-how.Lenz Maria Moser is the fifth generation from the Austrian wine family Lenz Moser and 15th in the direct line of the Moser family. The family has been active in the wine trade since 1610, with the first mention of the Moser family in their native village of Rohrendorf (Lower Austria) dating back to 1124. Lenz had a double university education in Austria's Klosterneuburg in business and oenology. Even with his formal education, Lenz attributes his understanding of the fundamentals of life and his winemaking knowledge to his grandfather, the legendary Professor Dr. Lorenz Moser III., who invented and developed the ubiquitous Austrian trellising system called the "Lenz Moser Hocherziehung". , which revolutionized vineyard cultivation across Europe.

Lenz's impressive wine career began at Lenz Moser Winery (Austria's premier wine producer) as General Manager for 10 years. In 1997, Lenz was asked to join Robert Mondavi as General Manager Europe, where he established the European branch and led the pioneering American wine company for nine years until it was sold to the Constellation Group. In 2005, Lenz returned to his Austrian roots by founding LAURENZ V. with two partners. Following in the footsteps of his grandfather, who helped to promote Grüner Veltliner from a minor grape variety in the late 1920s to the number one Austrian grape. Lenz and his partners have become the modern ambassadors of the variety and stick to the mission of establishing Austria's signature grape as a variety among the best white wines in the world. His second activity from 2005 was acting as CEO of an import company in Germany, bringing wines from 10 countries to Europe. In this capacity, he first met the people of Changyu in 2005, developing a close relationship with the leaders of this great and pioneering company. In 2015 they decided on a joint project: Chateau Changyu Moser XV, a collaboration with the great goal of producing the best and most important wines in China.
