Cerbaiona Winery

Cerbaiona is one of Montalcino's historic estates and gained international fame under the leadership of Diego Molinari. Its small production and uncompromising focus on quality made the estate a cult name within Brunello di Montalcino. In 2015, the estate was acquired by a new group of investors led by Matthew Fioretti. Since then, the estate has been gradually renovated while respecting its original character. Old vineyards have been replanted, sections converted to Alberello plantings, and the cellar expanded with modern fermentation rooms and cement vats for aging. The vision, however, remains the same: to produce wines with precision, balance, and a clear expression of the Montalcino terroir.

2023 Cerbaiona Rosso di Montalcino

Cerbaiona's Rosso di Montalcino is made from 100% Sangiovese and is a pure expression of the estate's terroir. While Brunello often displays more time and energy, Rosso di Montalcino showcases a more direct and fresh side of Sangiovese. At Cerbaiona, however, the style always remains refined and precise, with a clear focus on balance and drinkability.

Vinification and maturation

After fermentation, the wine is aged for about a year in oak barrels, a small portion of which is new wood. The wine then rests further in cement vats to ensure all components are fully integrated. This combination creates structure and complexity without the wood dominating the wine. The result is a clear and harmonious style in which freshness and terroir expression remain central.

The 2023 vintage

The 2023 vintage is characterized by vibrant freshness and aromatic expression. According to Monica Larner of The Wine Advocate, the wine opens with bright forest fruit, violets, and a subtle spiciness typical of the year. The structure is refined and energetic, with a beautiful balance of floral notes, red fruit, and a slight savory undertone. The wine combines elegance with tension while remaining highly gastronomic.

Color, smell and taste

Bright ruby red in color. The nose offers notes of blueberries, cherries, and violets, complemented by subtle spices and a light earthy note.

Lively and refined on the palate, with fresh acidity and fine tannins that provide structure. The fruit is bright and precise, with notes of red and dark forest fruit, while a light spiciness and a savory nuance add depth. The finish is long, elegant, and harmonious.

Production

Production of the 2023 Rosso di Montalcino is very limited, with just 7,800 bottles. This underscores Cerbaiona's small-scale character and its focus on quality over volume.
