history and region of cave Yves Cuilleron

Cave Yves Cuilleron is a family-owned winery in the Northern Rhône with roots dating back to 1920. In 1947, grandfather Claude began commercial bottling. Yves took over the estate in 1987 and expanded it to over 75 hectares, spread across Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, Côte-Rôtie, Cornas, Crozes-Hermitage and Collines Rhodaniennes. Yves combined his background in engineering and viticulture by integrating modern and sustainable production techniques without the use of heavy pesticides. The region is characterised by steep granite slopes, mistral winds and a semi-continental climate with warm summers and cool nights – ideal for Syrah notes with finesse and depth.

terroir and appellation Collines Rhodaniennes

The Syrah Les Vignes d'à Côté falls under the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes (Vin de France). The grapes grow in Chavanay on granite-rich and alluvial soils. This terroir gives the wine an elegant fresh structure, mineral character and a perfect balance between depth and suppleness.

grapes, harvest and vinification of Les Vignes d'à Côté 2023

Les Vignes d'à Côté 2023 is a 100% Syrah wine from vineyards near Verlieu (Chavanay). The grapes are hand-picked and sorted, lightly destemmed, and fermented with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled open vats for two to three weeks. Regular remontages and pigeages are applied for optimal extraction. After fermentation, malolactic conversion follows, after which the wine is aged for eight months in a mix of stainless steel and oak barrels (1–4 years old). It is lightly fined with egg white, but not filtered, so that the natural texture remains intact.

color, aroma and flavor profile of la syrah

In the glass the wine shows a deep purple colour. The bouquet reveals a rich palette of blackberries, black cherries, plums, violets and fine pepper spices. The taste experience is medium-bodied with juicy cassis and dark berries, surrounded by soft tannins and a pronounced mineral finish. The acidity is present but well integrated, and the finish is long and fruit-driven with subtle spicy notes. The freshness and balance make this a tempting alternative for red lovers seeking refinement.

why order syrah Les Vignes d'à Côté 2023

This Syrah is intended for serious wine consumers and sommeliers who want to offer a terroir-true, elegant red Rhône. The combination of manual work, sustainable viticulture and expressive fermentation produces a characterful wine with depth and finesse. In addition, it offers excellent value for money compared to larger appellations, without sacrificing complexity.

Yves Cuilleron represents the third generation of winemakers. Cave Cuilleron was founded in 1920. In 1987, the domain came into the hands of Yves through his grandfather and uncle. Together with François Villard, Yves Cuilleron is today one of the greatest talents in the northern Rhône. Wine Spectator calls him the leader of the new generation of winemakers in the Condrieu. Most of his vineyards are in and around Chavanay, just south of Condrieu. In total, it has 59 hectares divided between Saint Joseph (Blanc), Saint Joseph (Rouge), Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu.

Yves has an important slogan... picking grapes as ripe as possible! He is a gourmand who loves good food and 'Les Vins Gourmand'. You can also taste that in his wines. He makes his wines '100% maison'. For each plot or type of wine, he monitors the Cuilleron style of the relevant cuvée, without compromise. However, nothing is certain with him. He works on feeling, experience and continues to observe and adjust. He selects the fruit from the older and younger canes. He does the same with the different plots. He only blends different plots if there are enough synonyms or properties that complement each other.

In terms of winemaking, Yves goes his own way. He doesn't follow trends. He does not work conventionally, not organically and not biodynamically, but according to his own philosophy aimed at obtaining healthy grapes. He continuously observes in order to be able to intervene in time. He has been working sustainably for 20 years according to la lutte raisonnée; a sensible way of winemaking without pesticides and fertilizers. In the cellar he works with natural yeasts and prefers to use older casks and barriques instead of steel tanks.
