Description
This is of course one of Anselmo Mendes' showpieces, the 100% alvarinho from Monção e Melgaço. The special thing about this part of Vinho Verde is that it is surrounded by fairly high mountains, making it more sheltered from Atlantic influences. This warmth and less rain are ideal for the alvarinho to ripen perfectly. The grapes for this wine are planted on the best soils, on sunny slopes with poor soil of weathered granite. This produces a mineral wine, with body and power, but at the same time a beautiful freshness.
The wine is made by direct pressing of the destemmed grapes. This is followed by a long fermentation at a temperature between 14 ºC to 20 ºC. It gains extra richness and structure by maturing for at least six months on the fine lees, the dead yeast cells, which provide extra flavor compounds to the wine. In the glass the wine is bright straw yellow. On the nose, this Alvarinho by Anselmo Mendes has beautiful notes of tropical fruit, mango, flowers and apple, a hint of grapefruit. In the mouth the wine is soft and tasty, lush and stimulating, yellow plums, beautiful acidity, powerful, fresh and minerally. Give this wine some time. It is certainly ready to drink but will become even more balanced with some years. Really recommended value for money in the wine cellar.

The 2020 Alvarinho Muros Antigos comes in at 12.7% alcohol, 7.5 grams of total acidity and 1.5 grams of residual sugar. Nicely constructed and showing off pure fruit on the dry finish, this also demonstrates some grip on the finish, with the ability to linger nicely. A perfect food wine and also easy to sip on its own, this is elegant but concentrated Alvarinho done well. It should age for about a decade.
Often I require producers to show me their residual sugar (grams per liter of residual sugar, a.k.a. "r.s.") levels for various reasons. Anselmo Mendes, of course, is a serious producer who makes dry table wines. Accordingly, I have not specified any residual sugar levels, as my information was that they were in a very narrow range and all quite dry. If you're interested, here is what Tiago Mendes gave me. The maximum is 1.3 grams per liters, which is quite low. It's a good exercise.

Anselmo Mendes was born and grew up in Monção. It was, as a child, that he became acquainted with the culture of the vine and wine production.
The Alvarinho variety and the wine produced there immediately became a part of his life, to the extent that today Anselmo Mendes and Alvarinho are actually synonymous.
Anselmo graduated in Agro-Industrial Engineering in 1987, from the Higher Education Institute of the Technical University of Lisbon, and postgraduate in oenology from the Catholic University 6 years later. The philosophy of Anselmo Mendes is that every plot, every place gives the Alvarinho its own, different character.
