Description
"We are not winemakers," says Alois Lageder, a descendant of a family that has been passionately involved with wine for four generations. "We see our role more as that of a midwife, coach and teacher. Our task is to guide the grapes in good health and with the greatest possible care and to encourage the successful development of our wines in every way." Over time, the Lageder family has managed to buy several wine estates and vineyards in the best wine regions of Alto Adige. The company is currently managed by Alois Lageder, but the next generation is already eager to take over. The vineyards are almost exclusively biodynamic. The labels on the bottles are in line with this. They form a beautiful symbolic bridge between vineyard and cellar on the one hand and the wine in the glass on the other. These exceptionally beautiful wines continue to amaze us and have formed the foundation of our collection for many years. Many of the wines are 100% biodynamic and Demeter certified.
This delicious Alto Adige Chardonnay from Alois Lageder is fermented in stainless steel tanks, then aged for 4 months on its own fine sediment (sur lie). In the glass, this chardonnay is clear and sparkling, straw yellow in color with light green hues. In the nose delicate aromas with pronounced notes of subtropical fruit. Quite intense in taste, medium-bodied structure, supported by a good fresh acidity.

This wine strikes a terrific balance between primary fruit and integrated oak. You get a fresh and contemporary interpretation of the versatile Chardonnay grape that is nothing like the heavier wines you may remember from just a few years back. The Alois Lageder 2022 Chardonnay Gaun is bright and luminous. Its creamy texture is layered with lemon meringue pie, peachy mousse and golden apple. There is a ripe, slightly candied quality (from the hot vintage) that is well synchronized, with almond biscuit, pie crust and baking spice. The wine ferments with spontaneous yeasts, it ages on the lees and sees partial oak and partial stainless steel aging (for nine months). Production is 33,000 bottles.
Starting in 2021, the Robert Parker Wine Advocate Green Emblem winner Alois Lageder has used a new lightweight bottle called Summa across its entire production. This brought bottle weight down from 650 to 450 grams. Starting in 2023, they switched to an even lighter version of their Summa bottle that weighs 420 grams. This means that the annual glass consumption has been cut down from 512 tons to 398 tons. In 2023, Alois Lageder celebrated its 200th birthday. Congratulations.

The 2021 Chardonnay Gaun is vividly fruit-focused, with an alluring mix of ripe peaches, tropical melon and candied lemon forming its bouquet. This soothes with its texturally ripe orchard fruits and exotic inner florals, all perfectly balanced by a core of brisk acidity. This finishes potent and long yet fresh, leaving tangerine nuances that linger on and on. What a treat. The 2021 Chardonnay Gaun is a real charmer.

The Alois Lageder Italian winery in Alto Adige consists of 50 hectares of its own vineyards, managed on the basis of biodynamic principles. The holistic approach of winery Alois Lageder is reflected in the winemaking activities, the long-term relationships with numerous grape growers and their ambition to create awareness for an agriculture geared to nature. Alto Adige is located almost directly below the Brenner Pass, in the narrow valley that formed the Adige River in the Dolomites massif. Further south, the valley widens and the region becomes Trentino. Wine production in Alto Adige takes place on the slopes of the mountains, with vineyards sometimes reaching an altitude of 1000 meters. In Trentino, the vineyards are more in the plains and lower. Trentino and Alto Adige are 2 areas in the northeast of Italy, which are located below each other. They are often mentioned in the same breath as if it were one area, but the contrasts could hardly be greater. Alto Adige has only belonged to Italy since 1919 and is almost non-Italian, while Trentino is typically Italian in everything.

History
The roots of the Lageder winery go back to 1823 when the young craftsman Johann Lageder established himself as a wine merchant in Bolzano. His successors started producing their own wines and acquired a number of vineyards. Alois III, the great-grandson of the founder of the company, saw the variety of climatic zones in Alto Adige as one of the strengths of the region and bought the Löwengang wine estate in Magrè, in the southern part of Alto Adige, in 1934. Soon, smaller winegrowers started supplying him with grapes. When Alois III died unexpectedly in 1963, Alois IV was only 12 years old. Accordingly, his wife Christiane and his eldest daughter Wendelgard have led the estate on an interim basis. Since the mid-1970s, Alois IV - along with his sister and her husband and oenologist Luis von Dellemann - has redesigned the winery with a strict focus on quality and innovative methods in the vineyard and cellar. Today, the 50 hectares of vineyards owned by the family are grown biodynamically.
