Persoonlijke gegevens
The vineyards are located in Zamora, Valdefinjas and Villabuena. Toro is certainly famous for the many ungrafted/original vines that are not affected by the grape louse (Pre-phylloxera). The sandy soils ensure that the louse could not dig tunnels and thus could not reach the area. This is in contrast to more than 95% of all vineyards that were lost at that time, so we are still talking about ungrafted and therefore original authentic grapes (vines).
This is another top wine. 100% Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo). The grapes are picked exclusively by hand and collected in small boxes to avoid damage. The yield is 15hl/ha. 15 months maturation in French oak. Harvested exclusively from vines that are 45 years or older. Victorino is a very intensive, versatile, full-bodied Toro wine. Black fruit, cocoa, herbs, minerals and a long, impressive finish. Complex, concentrated, full, supple wine. Ripe black fruit, minerals, herbs, "roasted tones", ripe, full tannins and an impressive finish.
The EGUREN family sells its winery and with it NUMANTHIA and TERMANTHIA to Moët & Chandon. The EGUREN family has now started a new wine project in the DO Toro with TESO LA MONJA: Excellent plots in Zamora, Valdefinjas and Villabuena. The vineyards are located at an altitude of 650-800 m. and have a mainly sandy soil. All plots are planted with "Tinta de Toro", a grape variety related to Tempranillo. The youngest vines are already 15-60 years old and the oldest between 60-100 years old. With this new wine project, the EGUREN family has made a sensational start.

Parker
(RP 94+) There's increasing complexity in the wines, and the 2022 Victorino shows energy and power, natural freshness and acidity. It was selected from 35 hectares of older vines. The wine has a lot of floral nuances and notes of violets and ripe fruit without excess. It has a round and velvety palate with volume and ripe, elegant tannins. This matured in new barrels for 20 months, and the oak is neatly integrated and folded into the fruit. 45,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2024.
I tasted the latest releases from the Eguren family in Toro a little earlier on in the year when I tasted their wines from Rioja. It's quite a different expression of Tempranillo in Toro compared to Rioja, more exuberant and fruit-driven here. They produce 230,000 bottles per year. Drink Date: 2025 - 2037

James Suckling
Aromas of black cherries, violets, dark cherry compote, baked black plums and sweet spices. Flavorful and full-bodied with ripe, rich fruit and tight but fine-grained tannins. It shows the ripeness and power from Toro without getting too extreme. Long and flavorful. Drink from 2027. Vintage: 2022

Vinous
The 2022 Victorino is Tinta de Toro that was aged for 20 months in new French oak barrels. The nose is clean and expressive, offering plum, sour cherry and a subtle spicy edge. Broad and juicy, the palate has a creamy texture and elegant oak integration, with a long, fruit-driven finish. Refined and structured, this wine represents a modern, elegant take on Toro. Drinking Window: 2025 - 2045.

The Spanish winery Teso La Monja is located in the Toro. The winery heralds a new era for the Eguren family in DO Toro, a land from which she fell in love with the capacity of the old pre-phylloxera vines. Teso La Monja was founded in 2007. Wines that bring the potential of the Tinta de Toro with elegance, finesse and freshness, shared by all wines of the Eguren family attributes. The Almirez, Victorino and also the great Romanico (unprecedented good value for money in our opinion) are invariably 90+ Parker and Penin wines. Not surprising knowing that the Eguren family is also behind the Alabaster cult wine.
The Teso La Monja winery is located on north-facing loam soils with gravel on the surface, providing longer vegetative cycles for achieving balanced, powerful yet elegant wines that convey the maximum potential of soil minerality.
