Description
Within the world of ultra-exclusive Syrah, Porseleinberg is a rising star. The ratings for the 2018 vintage (100 points for Tim Atkin, 95 points for Robert Parker) heralded a new chapter for winemaker Callie Louw and his unique wine. The Porseleinberg hillside is located in the Swartland region, southeast of Riebeek-Kasteel. The soil of the hillside consists of blue schist, and due to the absence of a topsoil, the vines grow directly on the bedrock. It is an extreme terroir far from civilization, which suits the winemaker and his story.
Callie Louw is a classic vigneron: he lives on his land among the grapes, from which he makes wine. What's special is that he makes only one wine; he won't be distracted. His terroir philosophy leans towards that of the non-interventionists: his wines are an expression of time and place, and the vinification process is (almost) the same every year, so that the character of the vintage is fully expressed. Whole bunches from the oldest vines are picked at peak ripeness, then trampled and fermented using submerged cap fermentation (where the skins are constantly submerged). Callie uses pump-overs minimally, instead allowing the wine to rest as much as possible in a 2500-liter foudre and a few Nomblot eggs.
The resulting wine is often compared in structure and character to its finest counterparts from the Northern Rhône. Thanks to his increased knowledge of his terroir, Callie has managed to leave behind the power and structure of his earlier wines and find a balance between elegance and refinement. The 2022 has received excellent reviews from the international press, earning it 99 points as "Red Wine of the Year" from Tim Atkin, and Callie Louw as "Winemaker of the Year." Platter also awarded it 5 stars!

Ripe yet still firm, the 2021 Syrah is fresh and savory with a delightfully floral element that sways with spicy and dark red-fruited essences. Medium-bodied, the palate is balanced, fresh and firmly structured with gripping tannins and an elegant mineral tension. The wine ends with a ripe and spicy finish. 47,000 bottles were produced after resting 12 months in foudre before bottle aging for 16 months. Between the 2020 and the 2021, the 2021 is the one you want. Just give it another year in bottle, and enjoy through the middle of the next decade.

This is wild and savory, full of green-olive, rosemary, iron and brambleberry aromas. Then super silky and elegant on the medium-bodied palate with lightly peppery, fine tannins. Salty and herbal freshness throughout. A little less concentrated than the 2021, very fresh and already drinkable, but classy and full of character nonetheless from a difficult vintage. Drink or hold.

From: South Africa: Where Are We Now? (Sep 2024)
The 2022 Porseleinberg was macerated with about 70% submerged cap and 30% pump-over. It was matured 85% in foudres and 15% in concrete vats for 12 months, then an additional six months in bottle. It presents a deep ruby color. The bouquet takes time to open in the glass, revealing blackberry and touches of cassis, crushed violets and a judicious dash of balsamic. There’s wonderful delineation, but it opens very, very slowly. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, more structured than the 2021. White-pepper-tinged red fruit mixes with subtle menthol notes on the peacock's tail of a finish. Winemaker Callie Louwe describes this as a mixture of old and recent Porseleinberg, and I can see that. It’s a spellbinding Syrah that will require five or six years in bottle, but it will certainly be worth the wait.
- By Neal Martin on August 2024
Callie Louw revealed his passion for breeding cattle in the time when he is not crafting one of the Cape’s finest Syrah. “The 2022 vintage had an amazing start,” he told me when I visited his winery, which is truly in the middle of nowhere. “For the first time since 2015, we had above-average rainfall (475mm), and it rained throughout winter with decent spells during the growing season. There was nothing that encouraged rot, just showery. The canopies were amazing. Then, on January 1, the sun shone, and we got heat all the way to February 14 until March 10, the latest that I’ve picked. But it has the lowest alcohol at 13.3%. It is a vintage that is difficult to understand.” A fantastic wine, this Syrah is a benchmark for South Africa, one that benefits from several years in bottle. Readers should refer to my vertical tasting from earlier this year.

Wijnhuis
