Description
Domaine Henri Bourgeois is located in Chavignol, where the wine estate covered 2 hectares 60 years ago. The tenth generation of the family business now owns 65 hectares that supply grapes for half of the wines produced. The family also has a property in the Marlborough region of New Zealand and even bottles some of their spicy sancerres. The top wines of sancerre and pouilly-fumé mature in oak barrels.
Sancerre has a terroir that is more diverse than many people think. Not only calcareous slopes, but also surfaces with silex, the flint that we also know from Pouilly-Fumé. The cuvée d'Antan, one of Henri Bourgeois' flagships, is made from the slope with the highest flint content of the domain, in the village of Saint-Satur. The vines in the plot for the cuvée d'Antan are very old: they have been there since 1936. In combination with very low yields and sustainable viticulture, this ensures grapes with special concentration and depth. It is also made in a classic way, with fermentation and maturation in used barriques. Due to its classic character and special acidity, this is a Sancerre that can age for years, contrary to what we expect from this type of wine. It can safely be called a wine that puts Sancerre on the map in a classic way as a truly serious wine.
The Henri Bourgeois Sancerre Blanc d'Antan Terroir de Silex, one of Henri Bourgeois' flagships, is made from the slope with the highest silex content of the domain, in the village of Saint-Satur. Smoky, flint, lime, almonds, full and concentrated, lush and generous, beautiful acidity. Powerful, dry white wine. Great with grilled lobster, fried sweetbreads, turbot, risotto with large shrimps.

Bourgeois's 2019 Sancerre Blanc d'Antan Terroir de Silex is from a vineyard first planted in 1936 on predominantly flinty soils. The nose is intense, fresh and pure in all its flintiness and dried herbal aromas. This is a really pure and mineral Sancerre, or life from stone (to quote a well-known South African Sauvignon). On the palate, this is a pure, fresh and saline, quite firm and grippy Sancerre with still a little astringent tannins but lots of purity and tension. This is definitely a wine for connoisseurs and patient wine lovers. If you like oysters, you'll like this wine too. 14% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in March 2022.

A well-rounded, precise, succulent and minerally white with notes of stone fruit, white flowers, stones and gunpowder. Medium-bodied with bright acidity. Lively and fine-tuned with a viivd core of crunchy fruit and a mineral dominance toward the long finish. Drink or hold.

From: Sancerre: Finding Its Place (Aug 2022)
The 2019 Sancerre d'Antan provides a seductive entrance to this wine; there's a fiery line of flint that courses through this wine. Excellent concentration of ripe fruit, but this wine isn't about fruit flavors. It is fermented in older barrels, smoothing its edges and making this sway across the palate and leaving savory notes and taut grain. Certainly not a stereotypical Sancerre.

Based in the village of Chavignol, this is one of Sancerre’s biggest and most savvy producers. Not only does it have parcels in some of the finest vineyards in Sancerre, but it also produces wines from Pouilly Fumé and other center-Loire appellations like Menetou-Salon, as well as Marlborough, New Zealand. The entry-level styles offer a clean, crisp, uncomplicated expression of their appellations but things get more interesting higher up the scale. If you want to discover the spectrum of terroirs, whether it’s Kimmeridgian marls (try the cuvées Le MD de Bourgeois and Jadis), chalky clay (Les Côtes aux Valets) or flint (Les Ruchons), the Bourgeois tasting room would be a good place to start. The on-site restaurant is also worth putting on your must-dine-at lists in the region, dishing up possibly the best beef tartare I’ve ever had, as well as the full spectrum of Chavignol cheese.

Wijnhuis
Domaine Henri Bourgeois winery has been working with passion and care with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir grapes for 10 generations to make wines with a unique expression. Every member of the family: Jean-Marie Bourgeois, Arnaud, Lionel and Jean-Christophe uses his knowledge and expertise to achieve this goal. The winery is located in the heart famous town of Chavignol, on the largest terroirs of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. The area is located at the headwaters of the Loire.
The pioneering spirit within the family ensured that in 2000 a winery could also be started in Marlborough, New Zealand: Wijnhuis Clos Henri. Here too Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir bloom on the large terroirs of this region.
Clos Henri is a special new project in Marlborough, started by the renowned Bourgeois wine family from Sancerre, France. There, his wines are marketed under the name of the founder, Henri Bourgeois. This beautiful company in Chavignol is one of the references in the Sancerre. Henri is no longer alive, but his children and grandchildren continue the house in a magisterial way. Based on partly own vineyards and partly purchased grapes, the Bourgeois family produces mature and classic Sancerres, totaling some 1.2 million bottles, with 72 hectares of vineyards at the base.
They were able to apply the knowledge they gained in the Sancerre about the cultivation and vinification of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir one-on-one in their special new winery in New Zealand. For this purpose, the family acquired 109 hectares of meadows in Marlborough in 2000, in order to be able to unleash their passion in another country. They chose the Wairau River district, in the river valley west of Blenheim, the central town of Marlborough. A logical choice, because the soil here is very poor, due to the old deposits of river boulders, and therefore perfectly suitable for planting Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. But at the same time, the location has been chosen so that some of the vineyards are located on the hills. As a result, three types of terroir can be found on the purchased land, which enhances the complexity of the wines. The wines of the different parts of the vineyard have a distinctly different character.
One of the reasons for choosing this particular piece of land was that it was still so unspoilt. There was a sheep farm here, and the land was never plowed or fertilized - there was really no human intervention whatsoever. That meant a healthy surface, ideal for planting a beautiful vineyard. While maintaining the biological balance, Jean-Marie Bourgeois first planted plants that would give the soil some extra nutrition to compensate for the shortages of certain nutrients. The first canes were planted in August 2001. Each year, six hectares of vineyards are planted, so that it takes a total of twelve years before the whole piece is transformed from farm to vineyard. This also makes it possible for the family to get an even better idea of the special terroir step by step, as well as to further improve and adjust the vineyard management where possible. In this way, a special vineyard has been created for exactly the same two grapes with which Bourgeois is also successful in Sancerre and its surroundings: Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. The first wines under the name Clos Henri were made in 2003 and the following years benefited from the special terroir of this new vineyard. A beautiful project, which already yields special wines.
