Description
Frédéric Chaudière and his brother Alexandre jointly run Château Pesquié, located at the foot of Mont Ventoux. Their 72 hectares of vineyards are located within a maximum radius of 5 km around the Château in the municipality of Mormoiron and are planted on very siliceous soil, mixed with clay and sandstone. The ecological way of working, in combination with a high-quality and varied soil, the right grape varieties with a considerable age and the favorable microclimate with the cooling effect of the Mont Ventoux, guarantee top-quality wines. Both brothers with a lot of love for their wines and passion for quality, are currently seen as pioneers of their region and are a shining example for the Ventoux appellation. Robert Parker underlines the quality of this Château by regularly awarding high scores.
The Ventoux Quintessence Blanc is a blend of 80% oak barrel-fermented Roussanne and 20% stainless steel tank-fermented Clairette. Fine notes of pencil shavings accentuate honeyed pineapple in this medium to full-bodied wine that is round and rich on the palate. Dry toast and grilled pineapple notes appear on the nose of this fresh, medium-bodied offering, which remains tight and focused. The wine is wonderfully balanced with bright acidity and hints of lemon and lime zest on the long, delicious finish.
Quintessence' is a top-class white wine from Chateau Pesquié - the wine has received 92-94/100 (2019) Parker points and is certified organic.

A blend of 80% Roussanne (fermented and matured in demi-muids) and 20% Clairette (fermented and matured in tank), the 2019 Ventoux Quintessence Blanc comes across as a bit tight, taut and oaky—it appears to need some time to relax and allow the pineapple, pear and white peach notes to come through. It's medium-bodied and silky, with the potential to drink well for up to five years.
Château Pesquié is one of the great estates of the Ventoux, and thanks to the indefatigable efforts of Frédéric Chaudière, the wines are widely distributed around the globe. For many consumers, this this be the entry point to Ventoux, so it's important that the wines represent the region well—thankfully, they do. With Frédéric recently being elected head of the appellation, expect more visibility for this underrated region. While Fred is the globetrotting marketer, his brother Alexandre handles the viticulture and winemaking at the estate, whose impressive chateau nestles in the bucolic countryside above the small village of Mormoiron.
This year, because of COVID-related travel restrictions, we chatted via video link instead of at the property. Fred is high on the quality of the 2019s, calling the year, "A bit of a mystery. Fresh, dense, but elegant." Compared to 2017 (spring frost, then a dry summer) and 2018 (challenged by spring rains and mildew), he considers the 2019 vintage "pretty easy."
"We had a great spring, with some water in the soil, then a very hot end of June. There was a moment in July when we thought we'd have a blockage, but then it rained around August 10, followed by cool nights, and there is a freshness in the wines. September had perfect conditions for harvest."
I've included my reviews from last summer's trip to the region, as many of those wines are still likely to be on retail shelves and they show the estate's commitment to quality, with the 2018s being very strong. These are well-made wines that continue to offer solid value to consumers.

Frédéric Chaudière (commerce) and his brother Alexandre (winemaker) jointly run Château Pesquié, located at the foot of Mont Ventoux. The history of the winery is a real family history that started in the 1970s, when Odette and René Bastide bought an old and dilapidated winery and renovated it bit by bit. Above all, the vineyards were well cared for, they gave the harvest to a cooperative for 20 years. When around 1985, Odette's daughter Edith and her husband Paul Chaudière took over the winery, the vineyards were already in very good condition, in addition to the fact that the southern Rhône region was promoted to a qualified wine-growing region. This is how the first Château Pesquié came onto the market in the great vintage of 1990. In 2003 the two sons Alexandre and Frédéric took over the management of the estate together with their cousin Renaud. With a series of vintages that made a deep impression on the international press, they managed to get Château Pesquié into the top five of the Appellation Ventoux.
The conditions for this are therefore ideal. Just the location of the Château on the border of the Alps and the Mediterranean, in the extraordinary microclimate of Mont Ventoux. This guarantees very healthy grapes. The vineyards are at their best at about 35 years old. Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Roussanne, Viognier, Clairette and Chardonnay offer the typical Rhone grape varieties. The wine cellar is equipped with the most modern techniques. “If you like southern Rhône reds but don't like the price of most famous Châteauneufs, you should consider the great value and pleasure offered by Pesquié’s Les Terrasses”, Jancis Robinson writes, giving a telling assessment of the level of this winery!
