Description
Jacques and Sylvie Guinaudeau manage the vineyards of Grand Village together with the team that is also responsible for the vineyards at Château Lafleur (Pomerol). Their son Baptiste and his wife Julie are now also working on the realization of the goal of Grand Village: to slowly transform an old factory into a top winery. The team brings with them the knowledge and expertise of one of the best châteaux in Pomerol. It is therefore no surprise that the wines of Grand Village are spectacular.
After manual harvesting with strict selection, vinification takes place in the traditional way. First, the grapes undergo a short soaking period followed by the traditional alcoholic fermentation of 3 weeks in oak barrels. Then the grapes are pressed and the young wine is transferred to mostly new oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and maturation for a period of 10 months, after which the wine is bottled unfiltered.
The Grand Village Bordeaux Superieur is a blend of Merlot & Cabernet Franc. The wine has a deep ruby red color. In the nose we smell notes of blackcurrants and plums, a hint of roasted red pepper, juniper and laurel. In the taste palette ripe small red black fruit and dried herbs that are accompanied in the aftertaste by clearly present but ripe tannin. Very nice elegant pure blackberry fruit with fine acids on the finish. In the vinification of Lafleur and Grand Village, Guinaudeau is advised by the former cellar master of Petrus, Jean Claude Berrouet. The winemaking also falls under the responsibility of the team of Château Lafleur. Keep a close eye on these wines - this has an unprecedented good price / quality ratio and let's hope that they do not follow Lafleur in terms of price. Top rating for a wine in this price range from Parker and Suckling but anyway this also comes from a beautiful 2019. Parker writes: "......Is there a better value in contemporary Bordeaux than Grand Village?"

The 2021 Grand Village, a blend of 48% Merlot (picked on the 17th and 24th of September) and 52% Cabernet Franc (picked on the 2nd of October), is undoubtedly one of the best values in Bordeaux, revealing a fresh, gourmand bouquet with aromas of raspberry, cassis, spring flowers and loamy soils. Medium-bodied, tense and elegant with a supple, velvety texture, it’s perfectly balanced with powdery tannins and a long, mouthwatering, sleek finish that enhances its drinkability. While it offers plenty of immediate charm, it also has the structure to age over the next decade.

The Guinaudeau family's mantra is to "never submit to the vintage," and in 2021 that meant 10 sleepless nights of frost protection and a growing season that required quick reactions to perform the necessary treatments without neglecting the other important viticultural tasks of the year. The reward is the profound 2021 Lafleur, a brilliant blend of 52% Cabernet Franc and 48% Merlot that wafts from the glass with aromas of wild berries, violets, rose petals, vine smoke and black truffle. Full-bodied, layered and seamless, it's deep and penetrating, with superb concentration and beautifully refined structuring tannins, concluding with a long, resonant finish. A monument in the making, I wouldn't be surprised to see it transcend my bracketed score when revisited in bottle.

Increasingly replanted or grafted over to vine genetics from Lafleur, and lavished with the same viticultural attention to detail, this estate is fast becoming a loss-making (but in many respects enriching) venture for the Guinaudeau family. Offering up aromas of cherries, wild berries, petals and sweet spices, the 2019 Grand Village is medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with lively acids, powdery tannins and a long, mineral finish. It's a brilliant wine that makes a mockery of the traditional appellation hierarchy.
Is there a better value in contemporary Bordeaux than Grand Village? This 17-hectare estate is run by the Guinaudeau family, who in recent years have decided to work here just as they do at Château Lafleur. In fact, Grand Village and Lafleur are synergistic: all Grand Village's vineyards are being grafted over with Lafleur's massale selections of Cabernet Franc and Merlot; and once-used barrels from Grand Village travel immediately to Lafleur for re-use there. Grand Village is a testing ground where methods can be trialed before being employed at Lafleur; and in turn, Lafleur subsidizes Grand Village, permitting yields and techniques that would typically be unsustainable in the lowly Bordeaux Supérieur appellation. Of course, the market it catching on, but for now, these remain wines to buy by the case.

A rich Grand Village with a pretty density of dark-plum, dark-chocolate and walnut character. Medium- to full-bodied with velvety tannins and a creamy, savory and fresh finish. Lovely opulence at the end. 80% merlot and 20% bouchet. Better in a year or two.

The 2022 Grand Village Rouge is plump, juicy and quite extroverted in its first impression. But that is the first impression only. Aromatics and underlying structure emerge with a bit of air, signaling a complex, dynamic wine that punches well above its weight. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Bouchet (Cabernet Franc), with the Bouchet really driving the blend. Superb.
