Description
history of Château de la Crée
Château de la Crée is located in the village of Santenay, in the south of the Côte de Beaune. The estate owns and manages a number of renowned plots in various appellations, including Meursault. The focus is on terroir-driven wines that combine authenticity with finesse. Château de la Crée works with traditional Burgundian methods, combined with modern precision.
team and working method
The team at Château de la Crée works with a combination of sustainable vineyard methods, manual harvesting and careful selection. In the cellar, vinification is carried out at low temperatures and the wine is matured on the fine lees, with the aim of complexity, tension and balance. Small oak barrels are used, a limited number of which are new, to support the expression of the Chardonnay, not to dominate it.
Meursault region and climate
Meursault is located in the heart of the Côte de Beaune and is known for its chalky clay soils. The combination of a temperate continental climate, good sunshine and cool nights ensures slow and even ripening of the grapes. The soils in Les Grands Charrons – slightly higher to the west of the village – produce wines with tension, fine acidity and a recognisable mineral undertone.
Les Grands Charrons vineyard and grapes
Les Grands Charrons is a lieu-dit with an excellent reputation, located just outside the centre of Meursault. The Chardonnay vines are mature, resulting in smaller yields but greater concentration. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimum ripeness and taken directly to the cellar for low-pressure pressing.
A lieu-dit in Burgundy is an officially recognized, often centuries-old designation for a specific parcel within a vineyard area. The term literally means “named place” and refers to a geographically demarcated piece of land with its own historical name, often based on terrain features, location or use. A lieu-dit is smaller than an appellation and sometimes even part of a Premier or Grand Cru vineyard. Many lieu-dits in Burgundy have been known and mapped since the Middle Ages and a good example of this is this Meursault “Les Grands Charrons” which is a lieu-dit within the Meursault appellation.
vinification of the 2022 Les Grands Charrons
The must ferments naturally in a combination of stainless steel and French oak barriques. A small percentage of the barrels are new, to add structure without overpowering the fruit. After alcoholic fermentation, the wine undergoes full malolactic fermentation and then matures on the fine lees for 12 to 16 months. Excessive batoning is deliberately avoided to maintain freshness and precision.
color, odor and flavor profile
The wine has a clear, light golden colour with green reflections. The nose reveals aromas of white flowers, lime, ripe pear, hazelnut and a subtle hint of brioche. On the palate it is medium-bodied with a refined structure, lively acidity and a mineral tension. The finish is clean and persistent, with notes of lemon peel, almond and a subtle woody note that is elegantly interwoven with the fruit.
why order this wine?
The 2022 Meursault Les Grands Charrons from Château de la Crée is an elegant, expressive and gastronomically versatile wine. It offers the classic richness of Meursault with a modern precision and freshness. Ideal for lovers of refined Chardonnay and for sommeliers looking for a wine with both power and finesse.

This is really acidity-driven with zingy, vivid aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with an earthy undertone. Orange peel and bright acidity at the end. Rather wild. Drink or hold.

The venerable Château de la Crée estate in Santenay, Burgundy, dates back to the 15th century, when it belonged to Nicolas Rolin, chancellor to Philip the Good and founder of the Hospices de Beaune. Today, the Château's vineyards encompass seven rare Premier Cru blocks located entirely along the famous Côte d'Or escarpment, home to some of the world's most legendary Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. The Château de la Crée estate consists of 25 hectares of prime vineyard blocks in Pommard, Volnay, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet, Santenay and Maranges and all plantations are located on Premier Cru sites. Biodynamic farming practices are employed in all vineyards to encourage optimal terroir expression and ensure soil and plant health.
Ken and Grace Evenstad, founders and owners of Domaine Serene Winery, came full circle in their passion for great Pinot Noir and Chardonnay when they bought the respected Burgundian wine estate Château de la Crée in April 2015.
“Owning and farming legendary vineyards in Burgundy is a dream come true for us,” says Ken Evenstad. “We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to make our own wines from famous vineyards like Morgeot in Chassagne-Montrachet, Clos des Angles in Volnay, and La Garenne in Puligny-Montrachet where world class wines have been made for centuries.”
Since their first vintage in 1990, The Evenstads have produced world-class award-winning wines. Recently, the Domaine Serene 2010 Evenstad Reserve Pinot Noir and the 2014 Evenstad Reserve Chardonnay were placed in the top 3 of Wines of the World by Wine Spectator Magazine. such high regard by the publication. In addition, Domaine Serene was awarded Best Pinot Noir in the World in 2016 for their Winery Hill Pinot Noir, winning Platinum Best in Show at the Decanter World Wine Awards. Their continued commitment to quality and innovation has earned the Evenstads worldwide recognition as an iconic producer of world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They apply that knowledge and experience to take the wines from the Santenay region to a higher level.
Château de la Crée uses a collaborative approach to winemaking that spans decades of experience under the guidance of Domaine Serene founders, Grace and Ken Evenstad. Since 2017, our winemaker Pablo Bosch and the viticulture team have been working closely with the team at Evenstads and Domaine Serene to implement techniques in the vineyard and cellar to improve wine quality. The Château de la Crée team strives to continuously combine innovative winemaking techniques to highlight the best qualities of the legendary terroir found only in Burgundy. While great wines start with great vineyards, no detail is left unexplored during the winemaking process. There is no cutback in the continuous quest to make the highest quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the world.
