Description
A Cabernet Sauvignon from China that surprises everyone. Chateau Changyu Moser Family XV 2022 shows that Ningxia is more than just a new wine region.
Chateau Changyu Moser Family: from China to Austria and back
The story of this wine begins with Changyu, China's oldest winery, founded in 1892. Through collaboration with Austrian winemaker Lenz Moser, the family gained international momentum. Since 2015, he has been combining his expertise with the Chinese soil and sunshine of Ningxia. The result is a wine style that is recognizably Cabernet, yet has a distinctive character.
The grape Cabernet Sauvignon in Ningxia
Cabernet Sauvignon thrives in many climates, but Ningxia has something special. The region lies on the edge of the Gobi Desert. It's hot and dry during the day, but cools considerably at night. This temperature difference keeps the grapes fresh and creates vibrant acidity. The Cabernet's thick skins give the wine its deep color and firm structure. This makes the style powerful, but not heavy.
The terroir of Ningxia
Ningxia lies on a high plateau, some 1,100 meters above sea level. The Yellow River flows nearby, providing irrigation in this arid landscape. The sandy and gravelly soil drains well, forcing the vines to work hard. This produces concentrated grapes. Combined with the abundant sunshine, this results in full-bodied, characterful wines.
How the Chateau Changyu Moser Family XV 2022 is made
After harvest, the grapes are rigorously selected. Only the finest fruit makes it to the cellar. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel to preserve the pure fruit expression. This is followed by aging in French oak barrels. Here, the wine develops its additional layers: a hint of vanilla, cedar, and a touch of spice. The balance between fruit and oak makes this 2022 vintage both vibrant and structured.
Flavour profile of the 2022 Chateau Changyu Moser Family XV Cabernet Sauvignon
In the glass, you see a deep ruby red color. The aroma is inviting: ripe cassis, blackberries, and cherries, complemented by hints of tobacco and spice. The palate is full and rounded, with soft tannins that are still youthful yet already beautifully integrated. The fresh acidity on the finish keeps the wine balanced. This is a Cabernet that displays both power and elegance.
