Description
The Remondo Rioja Palacios winery is a family business with a four-generation history of wine production. One of the most prominent members of this family is Álvaro Palacios, known for his iconic wines in Priorat (L'Ermita, Finca Dofí, Les Terrasses) and El Bierzo (Corullón, La Faraona, Pétalos). With Remondo, he is firmly establishing a modern Rioja house on the map.
The Quiñón de Valmira 2022 is the only wine released under Álvaro's personal label and is sold separately from the other wines from Bodega Palacios Remondo in Alfaro.
The Valmira is a 100% Garnacha, originating from a vineyard of just 3 hectares in the municipality of Alfaro (Quinón de Valmira). The soil is calcareous with clay and iron-rich deposits, which gives the wine its refined character. For the 2022 harvest, whole bunches were partially used, which underwent natural fermentation with the yeasts present on the grape skins. Fermentation took place in oak vats with a long maceration, followed by malolactic fermentation and aging in French barriques for 18 months.
The 2022 vintage is characterized by its exceptional freshness and refinement. The wine sparkles in the glass with a vibrant ruby red color and opens on the nose with ethereal aromas of blossom, fresh herbs, and citrus zest. On the palate, it is delicate yet powerful, with notes of pomegranate, raspberry, and subtle hints of watermelon. The structure is silky, the acidity vibrant, and the finish endlessly elegant.
The Quiñón de Valmira 2022 combines suppleness with impressive depth, reaffirming its status as one of the most refined and special wines from Rioja.

I tasted the 2022 Quiñón de Valmira that I had already tasted before bottling last year, but this time I tasted it from bottle and next to the 2023. The year seems to have marked a change in the weather and even the aromatic profiles of the wines, but the Garnacha seems to resist. It delivered what it promised but, unfortunately, suffered in the comparison with the superb 2023. It has a pale ruby color with purple tints of youth. It's 85% Garnacha (not 58%, as I wrote last year), with the remaining 15% from other traditional varieties, fermented with a long maceration and some full clusters and matured in oak foudres for 17 months, after which it rested in concrete for another six months. It's floral, expressive, elegant and open, a little shier than the 2023, with ripeness, juicy red fruit and very fine tannins, just slightly dusty. It finishes dry and with some stony austerity that I loved. It comes in at 14% alcohol, with a pH of 3.5 and 5.3 grams of acidity. 5,680 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2024.

This is exceptionally pure, nervy and fragrant, with bright and incisive aromas that bring to mind red fruits with lavender and Mediterranean herbs, grapefruit zest, white pepper and exotic spices. This makes me think of mezcal. Formidable aromatics. The palate is equally seductive, fluid and elegant. A bit more tannin presence this year, but still quite fine and silky, which enhances the elegance of this wine. Drinkable now, but will hold.

From: Álvaro Palacios and Descendientes de J. Palacios - New Releases (Apr 2023)
The 2022 Quiñon de Valmira, Perez’s wine from Eastern Rioja, is a blend of 85% Garnacha and a mixture of other varieties, cropped at 14.5hL/ha. It has a light, airy bouquet with black fruit, chimney soot and subtle sea spray scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth and velvety opening. Plush tannins, lightly spiced, fresh and focused with a twist of bitter cherry and soy towards the finish. This is going to be very seductive. I adore its seamlessness.

In the late eighties, Alvaro met René Barbier, one of the rediscoverers and 'godfathers' of the Priorat. This tipped him to take a look at the forgotten wine region. Alvaro found vineyards here with very old vines. He knew immediately that he had discovered the area to be able to make absolute top wines. In 1989 he bought his first Priorat vineyard 'Finca Dofi' and in 1993 L'Ermita, a vineyard that is now considered one of the very best of the entire Priorat and is named after the chapel at the top of the vineyard.
With wines such as Finca Dofi and the now legendary L'Ermita he gained world fame and put the Priorat on the map as a wine region. All vineyards are processed on the basis of biological and / or dynamic principles to obtain the highest possible quality grapes and wine with the most natural character. Alvaro Palacios is barely 40 when he seems to have accomplished everything. Coming from a family of winegrowers - owners of the Bodegas Palacios Ramondo - as a young man in his twenties he learned the trade with Christian Moueix in the castles of Petrus and Trotanoy. Then he followed the catalan René Barbier in Priorato. Deeply impressed by ancient land and their qualitative potential, he decides to mine his own vineyard in this God-forsaken hole, 135 km south-west of Barcelona. According to Palacios' own words, the general belief is that "the yield is too low, the land is unworkable and requires a lot of manual labor" and that the chance of profitability is small. The sequel shows that the skeptics were wrong. The first millésime, namely the Ermita 1993, was immediately mentioned in the "superstars" club of Spanish wines. This cuvée, consisting of 80 to 90% Grenache Vieilles Vignes balanced by Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignan Vieiles Vignes, has provoked exceptional reactions in Spain but also in the rest of the world. The ultra-modern company of Alvaro Palacios, dominating the village of Gratallops from the top of the hill, testifies to its decisive influence and ongoing efforts to revolutionize the Spanish wine industry. Alvaro Palacios, the architect of the success of the Ermita, summarizes with conviction: "The philosophy behind the vinification involves expressing the character of the terroir with the greatest transparency and purity."
The authoritative British wine magazine Decanter has named Alvaro Palacios Winemaker of the Year 2015. He is honored for his efforts to put Spain on the map in general and the regions of Bierzo and Priorat in particular worldwide. Palacios has illustrious predecessors. Last year, the brothers Perrin won from Chateau de Beaucastel, for which the honor went to Angelo Gaja, Robert Mondavi and the late Serge Hochar.
At Grandcruwijnen.nl you will find an extensive selection of the wines of Alvaro Palacios such as his absolute cult wine the L'Ermita and the Dofi, but we can certainly also recommend the wines that are a lot friendlier in price such as the Álvaro Palacios Camins del Priorat.
