Description
The Il Caberlot is the iconic wine of Poderi Il Carnasciale and is made from the grape caberlot. This grape is so called because it shows characteristics of cabernet franc and merlot. Il Carnaciale is the only winery that makes wine. The CARNASCIALE is a true second wine, which has undergone the same vinification and care as IL CABERLOT, and is released 6 months after being filled in 0.75l bottles. In general, grapes from younger vineyards go into this wine, but not always. CARNASCIALE is a more progressive wine, with pronounced floral notes of geranium and herbs, which, like IL CABERLOT, express the characteristic notes of white pepper of this grape variety. 6 to 8,000 bottles are produced, depending on the harvest year and always bear the white x label.

Podere Il Carnasciale is located in the southern Chianti Mountains in the Vald'Arno di Sopra region of Tuscany, thirty kilometers north of Siena and Arezzo and sixty kilometers south of Florence, just outside the Chianti Classico region inland, overlooking the Arno Valley. The Vald'Arno di Sopra area already appeared in 1716 in the famous bando of Cosimo di Medici, which specified the link between origin and quality, along with Chianti, Pomino and Carmignano, a predecessor of the current system of AOC and DOC designations of origin. The estate is located in the middle of this vast region high at 425 meters above sea level at the junction of the Arno and Ambra valleys. located in central Tuscany in the middle of the golden triangle between Florence, Siena and Arezzo. The Vald'Arno di Sopra region was recognized more than 300 years ago for its specificity and quality with a climate more temperate than on the coast due to its altitude, numerous mountains and valleys and true biodiversity.
Run by the Rogosky family together with the team, Podere Il Carnasciale is a winery that lives for, but also from, the wines it produces. Following the idea and vision of father Wolf Rogosky, the estate is today run by Moritz, together with his mother Bettina and daughter Carla-Elle. Marco Maffei has been working at Il Carnasciale for more than 10 years and as technical director is responsible for the vinifications and the making of these top quality wines
THE CABERLOT VARIETY AND THE FIRST VINEYARD
The variety we call Caberlot was first identified in the late 1960s in an abandoned vineyard near Padua by the agronomist Dr. Remigio Bordini, a distinguished gentleman with whom they still work. After hearing of this discovery, Wolf met Dr. Bordini and the oenologist Vittorio Fiore in the early 1980s, and after the bitter frost of 1985, he set out to produce a great wine with a truly unique character. The first vineyard called Carnasciale with an area of 0.3 hectares was planted in 1986 in high density, and gobelet / albarello / head-trained, with 11,000 vines per hectare. The autochthonous terroir, rocky and on slopes, had seen nothing but the cultivation of olive trees for more than two hundred years, since there were no vines, no cellar and no barrels on the farm of Carnasciale.
While the grape has the organoleptic characteristics of Cabernet Franc, its ampelographic profile is closer to that of Merlot, leading us to believe that the loose truss Caberlot grape may be a natural, spontaneous cross of the two varieties. The so-called French varieties have traditionally been planted in the north of Italy. Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Carmenere, but the late ripening and low-sugar producing Caberlot turns out to be something unique. To date, they have decided not to conduct a DNA test on the variety, but to deepen our experience and knowledge with each new vintage, of which there are 32 to date. So it is actually a breed that does not exist officially, let's call it private, but whose unique properties are recognized all over the world
Two more parcels were planted in 1999 and 2004, the 0.8 Ha Selva vineyard 10 kilometers to the north and the 1 Ha Vincaïe vineyard 3 kilometers to the east. To expand our terroirs, the Perelli and Volpaie vineyards were planted in 2010 and 2013, for a total area of today's vineyard just under 5 hectares.
