Description
The cuvée Propiedad is the first wine of the Remondo winery Rioja Palacios, a family business that has been linked to wine production for four generations. One of the most notable members of this family is Álvaro Palacios, who also produces wines in Priorat (L'Ermita, Finca Dofí, Les Terrasses) and El Bierzo (Corullón, La Faraona, Petalos). Now with Remondo they have a very modern Rioja house on the map and the Propiedad is a model of innovation and renewal because this is a Rioja wine but this time not a Tempranillo but a 100% Garnacha. The grapes are selected from old vines in five plots in different "Parajes" - Valtomelloso, Valviejo, Las Mulgas and Corral de Serrano. The vines range from 30 to 90 years old, and like the rest they are farmed organically. The destemmed and crushed grapes are fermented in oak barrels with indigenous yeasts. It underwent malolactic fermentation in barrique and then the wine matured in oak barrels for 18 months.
The taste combines juicy fruit with earth tones and very fine tannins and balsamic, Mediterranean herbs and a delicious, almost salty aftertaste. In the nose citrus fruits, oranges, strawberries and fine herbs such as pink pepper. The taste is firm and exciting. It is only made in the top years and the 2021 vintage has received 95+/100 points from Parker.
About Palacios Remondo
Palacios Remondo is the Rioja winery of Álvaro Palacios. He has 100 hectares of vineyards at the foot of Mount Yerga, with 10 to 90 year old plants at altitudes of 400 to 600 meters above sea level. Production averages 950,000 bottles per year. In 2022 there was no Propiedad; all those grapes went to La Montesa. The years are getting warmer, and that started with 2020. 2021 gave them a break with a year like the old days, snow and all, and the 2022s have more color and tannin, making it a more Mediterranean year. 2023 was also quite warm and very dry. He is planting a new vineyard with Garnacha, but also other varieties, such as Tinta Velasco, Bobal and Moristel, the varieties traditionally found in the vineyards.

The Propiedad bottling is not produced every year, and the 2021 Propiedad, mostly Garnacha (with 10% other grapes) from old organically farmed and head-pruned vines in the parajes of Las Mulgas, Cabecilla de la Ra and Valmira, fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts. It has the signature of this cuvée in a cooler year: elegant and fresh but not lacking power or concentration. It has a velvety, precise and seamless palate, with great freshness and balance, red berry and crushed stone flavors and a citrus twist of freshness. There is a lot more depth and complexity compared with the already exceptional La Montesa. It’s fine-boned and elegant, with very fine tannins and a precise and clean finish. It's also powerful and ripe at 14.5% alcohol, keeping a pH of 3.5 and 5.3 grams of acidity. 46,400 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2023 after it spent 10 months in oak vats and barrels of different sizes.

Vivid, racy fruit, full of strawberries, dark raspberries, pomegranate, mineral and rose hips. Subtle white pepper accent. The succulent medium-bodied palate is framed by bright berry fruit and fresh, chalky tannins. Intense but weightless, with a long, linear finish, full of energy and freshness. Delicious now, but can keep very well, too.

From: The Many Riojas of Rioja: A Tale of Forking Paths (Apr 2024)
The 2021 Propiedad is a blend of 90% Garnacha and 10% other red varieties, sourced from the Monte Yerga vineyards in Alfaro, Rioja Oriental. Fermented with 55% whole clusters, it aged for ten months in foudres to maintain its purity and proximity to the fruit. This ruby-red wine features a reductive nose with notes of sour cherry, elder and grapefruit, along with herbal undertones that create a dynamic interplay. On the palate, it is dry, lean and cleansing, lingering with a chalky, compact texture. This infusion-like red boasts an intense and vibrant mouthfeel, rich in nuance.

Located in Alfaro, Palacio Remondo is the heart of the wine universe presided over by Álvaro Palacios, one of the leading oenologists of the new Spanish wine movement. They serve as a stylistic beacon in Rioja Oriental for two reasons. Firstly, they cultivate 110 hectares in Monte Yerga, where high, lime-clay slopes lend a cool structure to the wines. Secondly, they perform meticulous extractions, almost like infusions. The results are fascinating, both with Garnacha—Palacios’s specialty—and Viura. The Garnacha here is a source of inspiration for new generations, transparently reflecting their terroir with a rich range of subtle qualities—a Rioja benchmark.

Álvaro Palacios, after successes in Priorat and Bierzo, returned to his native Rioja in 2000 and took over the management of the family business Palacios Remondo. He was concerned about the transformation of Rioja into a region with large volumes, excessive use of wood and little attention to terroir. Palacios sought change and advocated for a reorientation from Rioja Baja to Rioja Oriental, a name change that was implemented in 2018. This was accompanied by adjustments in maturation rules and geographical classification. Rioja Oriental is known as a warm area where bulk wines are often produced, mainly with garnacha due to its southern exposure. Despite this, Álvaro Palacios decided to completely replant the family vineyards, originally planted with tempranillo, with old garnacha vines. This was a considerable effort, but for Palacios it was the only right way to produce quality wine in this area.
