Description
Chateau Changyu Moser XV: a pioneer in Chinese quality wines
Chateau Changyu Moser XV is one of China’s leading wineries and part of the prestigious Changyu Pioneer Wine Company, founded in 1892. This historic wine empire has its origins in Yantai, Shandong Province, and has grown to become China’s oldest and largest wine company. In collaboration with Austrian winemaker Lenz Moser – a name associated with European winemaking for generations – the modern Changyu Moser XV winery was created in 2015.
The addition of “XV” refers to Lenz Moser as the fifteenth generation of his family. The collaboration marks a bridge between traditional European winemaking and the emerging potential of the Chinese terroirs. This international approach has resulted in wines that more than stand up to the critical eye of international wine journalists.
The Chateau Changyu Moser XV Longyu M12 is one of the most prestigious and iconic wines from China. Within the Chinese wine world, this cuvée is seen as a calling card of the top quality that the country can now deliver. The wine symbolizes the enormous leap that Chinese winemaking has made in just a few decades. With its maturation in new French oak, its distinctive character and its complex structure, the Longyu M12 is a serious competitor to the big names from Bordeaux and Napa Valley – and this has also been noted internationally by renowned wine critics.
What makes this wine so special is that it is only produced in very limited quantities and is normally almost exclusively available within China for the domestic market and top restaurants. Thanks to our exclusive partnership with Chateau Changyu Moser XV, Grandcruwijnen is one of the few suppliers in Europe that is allowed to import this wine directly and offer it to wine lovers and sommeliers.
For the serious wine buyer, this offers a unique opportunity to experience the highest level of Chinese viticulture – a rare asset in any cellar collection.
The Ningxia region: powerful terroirs and optimal climate
The Longyu M12 comes from the Ningxia region, located at the foot of the Helan Mountains in northwestern China. This region is internationally recognized as the best wine region in the country. With its location at an altitude of 1,100 meters, a chalky soil structure and a dry, continental climate, Ningxia offers ideal conditions for growing blue grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon.
The warm days and cool nights ensure a slow ripening of the grapes. This contributes to an excellent aromatic concentration and ripe tannin structure. The vines are also cared for in a sustainable way, with an emphasis on low yield per hectare and intensive care for each plant.
Cabernet Sauvignon: structure and depth
The 2021 Longyu M12 is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, with grapes originating from carefully selected plots in Ningxia. This grape variety is known worldwide for its robust character, longevity and ability to develop complex aromas during barrel and bottle maturation. At this altitude and in the climate with extreme heat and cold, the berries are very small and with very thick skins. Nowhere else in the world are these grapes so small.
The harvest took place in the second half of October. Only the best grapes were picked by hand and strictly selected for ripeness and health. The careful selection forms the basis for the quality and depth of this wine.
Fermentation and maturation in French oak barrels
After fermentation under controlled temperature, a maturation of no less than 18 months follows in new French oak barrels. This long barrel maturation ensures integration of the firm tannins, extra complexity and refined wood tones. The wine is bottled unfiltered, which contributes to its storage potential and depth in the glass.
The structure is tight but polished. The combination of wood influence and fruit makes this wine an excellent choice for further bottle aging. It can easily develop further in the cellar for 10 to 15 years.
Deep color, complex aroma and layered flavor
The color of the Longyu M12 2021 is deep ruby red with a purple rim, which underlines its youthful character. On the nose, the wine presents itself rich and complex: ripe black fruits such as cassis, blackberries and black cherries are complemented by notes of cedar, graphite, cloves and a hint of vanilla.
In the mouth the wine is powerful and layered. The tannins are present but refined and perfectly integrated. The taste develops from black fruit to roasted notes, liquorice and subtle spiciness. The long finish shows balance, structure and elegance. This is a wine for the serious wine lover who seeks depth and complexity.
