Banfi's Rosso di Montalcino flows over the palate with layers of luscious, expressive fruit. The Banfi Rosso has had an education on partly new and partly 2 year old French oak. Wonderfully subdued and seductive scent, soft fruit, cherries and a hint of vanilla. The wine has a pretty nice mouthfeel, especially due to the minerality on the mid-palate. The Banfi Rosso Montalcino is soft and accessible with notes of plums and cherries, tasteful, a slick and very enjoyable glass of wine.
Brunello di Montalcino is a special wine region, but within Brunello Banfi is a special winery. About 800 hectares of vineyards have been planted on the estate of no less than 2830 hectares, making Castello Banfi by far the largest and most important producer of Brunello di Montalcino. In addition, all kinds of other wines are made based on the region's own grapes or imported grape varieties such as chardonnay or pinot grigio. The estate is dominated by a beautifully restored medieval castle, which houses a glass museum, a wine shop and two restaurants. This makes it more than worth a visit.
Castello Banfi belongs to the Italian world top and comes from Tuscany. In fact, Banfi's success story begins as early as 1919. In that year John F. Mariani, an American with Italian blood, starts his wine business Banfi Vintners in New York. More than 50 years later, his sons, John and Harry, venture to Tuscany and start one of the most spectacular adventures in Italian wine history. With American bravura and entrepreneurial spirit, they bought the medieval castle Poggio alle Mura near the town of Montalcino and brought the old vineyards back to life. In the mid-1970s, Ezio Rivella, one of Italy's best oenologists, joined the team. The 'Banfi' project paid off sooner than expected. Castello Banfi (as the company has been officially called since 1984) managed to create the ideal conditions for the different grape varieties in many places.
