Description
We could call Álvaro Palacios a magician. Together with his cousin, he put Bierzo on the map and makes beautiful wines in Priorat. However, his roots lie in Rioja, where the family estate Palacios Remondo is located. The vines have an average age of 34 years. In addition to Garnacha, there are a few other grape varieties planted, about 5% of which are used in this wine. Álvaro Palacios has a preference for wines that reflect the terroir. He makes such wines in Bierzo, in Priorat, and now also in Rioja. The fact that it is a crianza - two years of maturation, one year of which in wood - is of After the harvest, a strict selection takes place, only the best fruit goes through to the fermentation tank. Fermentation takes place spontaneously in stainless steel tanks. The wine then matures for 12 months on a mix of French and American oak. When his father died in 2000, he returned to take over the oenological management of the company. The vineyards of Palacios Remondo are located in the eastern part of Rioja, where the Garnacha grape generally thrives better. The result is a beautiful expression of Garnacha with strawberries, forest fruits and sweet spices due to the wood aging. La Montesa Selección Especial is the big brother of La Montesa and is only made in the best years. secondary importance. For Álvaro Palacios, the terroir is much more important and so it gets a place on the label: Monte Yerga. The vineyards are located on the foothills of the mountain, at an altitude of 550 meters above sea level.
The Reserva Selección Especial La Montesa has a beautiful ruby red color in the glass with the typical notes of aromatic Garnacha in the nose with lots of cherries and plums, somewhat floral and some sweet spices such as nutmeg, cedar, cinnamon due to the wood maturation. In the mouth the wine has a good structure and concentration, with supple tannin and is clearly a bit fuller than its little brother the La Montesa. This Reserva has a nice balance between the ripe fruit and the sweet spices of the wood use. Delicious with manchego and jamon. Also delicious with albóndigas in tomato sauce.

They are going for lower yields and less bottles of the 2020 La Montesa and slowly putting prices up, as they feel the wine is more serious than what the perception of the affordable price makes it. 2020 is a powerful vintage; it's structured and textured, the oak is very nicely integrated (12 months in barrel, but the powerful wine absorbed it completely), and it's powerful with 14% alcohol and a pH of 3.55, a little darker than in previous years. The tannins are very fine with a subtle chalky texture. There were 2,319 barrels that resulted in 672,000 bottles, 10,000 magnums and some larger and smaller formats. It was bottled from April 2022.
I tasted the latest wines from Palacios Remondo as part of a tasting of Alvaro Palacios's full portfolio. I now include them here again for context and completeness of the Rioja article.

The modern-inspired 2020 La Montesa is a blend of 90% Garnacha and 10% other red varieties sourced from Monte Yerga in Alfaro, Rioja Oriental. Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, this infusion-like wine boasts a purple-red color. Its enticing, earthy-reductive nose presents notes of blood and sour cherry, intertwined with herbal and grapefruit undertones. The palate is precise and exhilarating, with a lean and taut profile that vibrates with a juicy, chalky mouthfeel, all balanced on a refreshing core—an alluring, flavorful red.

Álvaro Palacios, after successes in Priorat and Bierzo, returned to his native Rioja in 2000 and took over the management of the family business Palacios Remondo. He was concerned about the transformation of Rioja into a region with large volumes, excessive use of wood and little attention to terroir. Palacios sought change and advocated for a reorientation from Rioja Baja to Rioja Oriental, a name change that was implemented in 2018. This was accompanied by adjustments in maturation rules and geographical classification. Rioja Oriental is known as a warm area where bulk wines are often produced, mainly with garnacha due to its southern exposure. Despite this, Álvaro Palacios decided to completely replant the family vineyards, originally planted with tempranillo, with old garnacha vines. This was a considerable effort, but for Palacios it was the only right way to produce quality wine in this area.
