Tapias 2020: a great Rioja has arrived for the 2nd time at the Place de Bordeaux

On September 15, 2023, Marqués de Riscal launched a unique Rioja, coming from its single vineyard Tapias 20209, which will now be distributed for the 2nd time through the Place de Bordeaux system where Grand Cru wines can buy directly as an official wine merchant. Francisco Hurtado de Amézaga, General Technical and Production Manager, explains: "This marks a return to its roots for Marqués de Riscal, something that seemed logical to us given the relationship that the winery has had with Bordeaux for over 160 years. More than a century ago, Marqués de Riscal even sold its wines through the Place de Bordeaux. It is a real return to the roots of the distribution of the winery's wines. Marqués de Riscal decided to launch this Rioja, Tapias 2019 on the Place de Bordeaux because it is a wine that is reminiscent of the wines that the house made in its early days, with a certain Bordeaux influence in terms of winemaking methods.

Las Tapias, a unique vineyard

Tapias takes its name from one of the best vineyard plots of Marqués de Riscal, Finca Las Tapias, planted in 1968 and has unique terroir characteristics with its iron and calcareous clay soils. Located in the town of Elciego, these vines were planted in the traditional way with Tempranillo grafts from an old vineyard, known for its fine quality. This incredible plot is surrounded by a rich and varied flora with rockrose, lavender, rosemary, sage and wild thyme. Planted on ancient terraces where the Ebro River flowed for thousands of years, it reveals a unique terroir. The best grapes from this plot were carefully selected to produce the Tapias cuvée. Tapias is a wine that will continue to improve with age and has a good backbone and a tight mouthfeel and fine tannins, combining elegance and power. In the nose there are well-defined notes of blackcurrant and cherry, with nuances of smoked and menthol. A very harmonious, balanced wine with a huge fruit intensity and a spicy, tasty finish.

Marqués de Riscal was founded in 1858 by Camillo Hurtado de Amézega, Marquess of Riscal. He owns vineyards and a bodega on the 'Torrea' estate and has lived in Bordeaux since 1836. He is asked by the directors of the Alava district, because of his expertise, to find a winemaker who should be able to to introduce wine growers in La Rioja to the techniques used in the Médoc.Eventually one Jean Pineau, winemaker at Château Lanessan, is contracted to fulfill this mission. That same year, the Marquis of Riscal shipped to the Rioja district '9,000 fully guaranteed young vines' of the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Pinot Noir varieties. Objective: to experiment with renowned wine varieties, in an area where so far mainly Tempranillo and Graciano dominated.

Today Marqués de Riscal has remained true to the old principles, the heritage of the ancestors. New insights have led to continuous refinement of the process and product quality. The company pays a lot of money and attention to research and development. Among other things, this policy has led to the installation of two manual selection tables, a unique system in Spain, so far actually only used at top-Châteaux in Bordeaux.

In addition to the Rioja wines such as the Chirel and Gran Reserva, Marques de Riscal in the Rueda also makes great Verdejo wines under the name: Marques de Riscal Finca Montico Verdejo.
