Description
This Pruno Magnum edition is made from organically grown grapes from a special organically certified plot with the best grapes. Under the Tab: Attachment you will find the factsheet and Winemakers notes about this Pruno Limited Edition Magnum. Unbelievable what a wine for this price. This Pruno from Finca Villacreces is still young but has a lot of potential for the coming years. Time and again this beautiful wine scores very high with the international wine press and Finca Villacreces has proven to be able to produce a consistent quality year after year. Parker speaks in his review about: "WOW - normally such a wine costs between 75-150 dollars!!!" and speaks about "over-delivering"
The total vineyard area of 60 ha was used in the past for half by Peter Sisseck in his blend of Flor de Pingus. This Pruno is therefore an incredible wine for its price. The Pruno is a sensational wine.
The Finca Villacreces is an old abbey located on the "Golden Mile" along the Duero river in the Ribera del Duero appellation in Spain. The total area of the estate is 115 hectares of which 60 hectares are vineyards. These 60 hectares are divided over 15 different plots that all contribute to the quality of the wines on this impressive estate. The sandy terroir and the high altitude of the vineyards do not make it any easier to ripen the planted grapes tinta del païs (tempranillo), merlot and cabernet sauvignon. The pine trees, which are over 100 years old, do contribute to a microclimate in which the grapes feel good and the harvests have been of an exceptionally high level, especially in recent years. Due to the high altitude, merlot and cabernet sauvignon in particular have a very difficult time ripening here. In recent years, much has been invested in the vineyards: drip irrigation, the vines are tied higher to get more leaves and therefore better photosynthesis and the young planting of the newest vineyards already give an unprecedented quality of fruit. Only when the grapes are optimally ripe are harvested here and that results in beautiful concentrated wines with a fine acidity. All wines from Finca Villacreces undergo malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels. Depending on the wine, the storage in barrels is determined. Of course, the harvest year also has an influence on this and there is a deviation from the standard.
A collector's item is the limited edition of Pruno Magnum in a beautiful case designed by an artist. Every year there is a different version. This limited edition is always available at the end of the year and prior to the release of the regular bottles a few months later. The 2022 vintage of Pruno will be released around Q1 2025 and these magnums will be on the market around the end of November 2024.
The 2022 vintage sees the first incorporation of Merlot into its blend, keeping it true to its essence but with a renewed expression. The 2022 was awarded 92 Parker points
This year, the collection has an attractive and colourful design, completely differentiated, but with a common theme that pays homage to the fruit that gives the wine its name: the pruno. The design follows a striking visual style that emphasises the essence of wine and the tasting process, through a series of three canisters that recreate the phases of wine tasting: sight, smell and taste.

As I've often heard and seen in this vintage, the result of the 2022 Pruno has been much better than expected after a torrid summer and an early harvest. The wine keeps its balance and poise, its fruit-driven personality and the approachability from previous years. It has contained ripeness, 14.05% alcohol, clean aromas and a juicy and velvety texture. Highly drinkable. It's a blend of 94% Tinto Fino, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Merlot. 575,651 bottles,10,000 magnums and 100 double magnums produced, so availability shouldn't be a problem. It was bottled in November 2023.
Starting with the 2021 harvest, all of the vineyards and wines from Finca Villacreces are certified organic. Finca Villacreces was created in 1994, and it's the Ribera del Duero project from the Izadi/Artevino group since the Antón family purchased the company in 2004. They purchased a further 9.5 hectares of old vines in 2022, a high-altitude plot with the idea to release a new wine from it in 2025. As with other wineries in the group, they implemented changes in their viticulture in 2022 to be able to harvest earlier as, like many others, they started the search for wines with lower alcohol and more longevity, also pushed by the scarcity of water. As for the wines, they also made some changes to use less new wood, co-fermenting with some white and using a small percentage of full clusters. They currently own 154 hectares of vineyards and produce 550,000 to 685,000 bottles, depending on the vintage.

From: Ribera del Duero: A Shifting Frontier for Spanish Wine (Nov 2023)
The 2021 Pruno is a blend of Tempranillo with a 5% dash of Cabernet Sauvignon from Quintanilla de Onésimo, aged for 12 months in oak barrels. Garnet-red with a purplish sheen. The fruit-forward aromas feature plum and cherry along with herbal and oaky layers. The palate is broad and indulgent with reactive, juicy tannins. This is a mild but rewarding Ribera del Duero red.

The winery Finca Villacreces is located in a beautiful area. The winery is located right next to Duero, next to the well-known Vega Sicilia. The winery has 115 hectares of estate, of which 60 hectares are vineyards. The 60 hectares of vineyards are spread over 15 different places, all of which contribute to the quality of these delicious wines. Because the area is very sandy and the location of the vineyards is high, it is not easy to get certain grapes ripe. However, the pine trees that are more than 100 years old do cooperate for the grapes that are difficult to ripen.
The climate is extremely different, the temperature can rise to 40 degrees, but also drop to 10 degrees below zero. The nearby river; de Duero, ensures that the grapes survive the warm climate. Finca Villacreses is a very popular winery partly because of the Pruno wine which offers an unprecedented beautiful glass of wine for the money. The fact that it has been repeatedly named best value wine by the Wine Advocate naturally also helps. Other highly recommended wines are the Finca Villacres wine and the cult wine Nebro (the latter two are only made in good years).

Of course, the harvest year also influences this and there is a deviation from the standard. Pruno is aged for 12 months, Reserva for 16 months and Nebro for 18 months. After bottling, the bottles remain in the cellar for a long time before being put on the market. This is shorter for the Pruno than for the other wines.
