Description
The Janasse CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE BLANC is a very serious and superbly elegant wine. It's a complex fruit bomb with peach, citrus, pear, and vanilla. This white Châteauneuf du Pape is a blend of 50% Grenache Blanc, 25% Clairette, and 25% Roussanne. The wine has a ripe texture with hints of lemon peel. The finish reveals a touch of saltiness and a pleasant bitterness, and what lingers is a delightful, lasting feeling of freshness.
Domaine de la Janasse dates back to 1967 when it was founded by Aimé Sabon with 15 hectares of vineyards. The total area now comprises 55 hectares and is currently run by his son Christophe and his sister Isabelle. The vineyards are situated on challenging soils of gravel, sand, and large boulders. The vines are 40 to 80 years old. Yields are usually less than 30 hl/ha due to strict pruning and a rigorous vendange verte (green season).
Janasse's big breakthrough came in 2007, when their Châteauneuf du Pape "Veilles Vignes" scored 100 Parker points! Year after year, all their wines have been rated excellent. The quality of this estate is so high that even their "regular" Cotes-du-Rhone is already highly regarded worldwide! This is truly a top-notch estate!

This full-bodied dry white has a very good balance of waxy richness and freshness plus aromas of pomelo, grapefruit peel and rosemary. The restrained tannins deftly support the long, polished finish. A cuvee based on grenache blanc with a generous amount of clairette. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

From: Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Alluring 2023s and Benchmark 2010s (Nov 2024)
The 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc unwinds with white peach, ripe pear, yellow apple and cedar aromas of good intensity. Concentrated and rich, the full-bodied 2023 concludes with solid drive on the generous finish. This can be enjoyed upon release.

Christophe Sabon shed some light on why the 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes, usually a full-throttle red cruising at a high level, didn’t perform as well as expected when I tasted it earlier this year. “Our Grenache parcel in the La Crau lieu-dit was severely struck by summer hail, which is why it was missing from the final blend. It’s usually that part of the blending puzzle that brings charm and roundness to the wine.” After a brief re-tasting, my assessment from four months earlier was re-confirmed. The 2022 is by no means a bad wine—it’s just not at its usual level. The passing of the organic certification process is major news at Janasse, with the 2024 vintage being the first to be officially certified.
Tasting through the portfolio, 2023 is shaping up to be a solid vintage here, delivering inviting, fruit-driven reds with markedly spicy profiles. I suspect the wines will be accessible quite soon after release. I also enjoyed the 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Prestige, a rich and powerful white for hedonists. We finished the tasting with the splendid reds from the 2010 vintage, with the gorgeous Vieilles Vignes having just entered its broad drinking window.

He is a very successful winemaker! Christophe cultivates more than 15 hectares of vineyards in total. The variety of different grapes is very large, including Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Marsanne, Roussanne, Carignan, Bourboulenc, Counoise. All wines are made classically and excel through the combination of power and finesse. The vineyards are located on a difficult surface of pebble, sand and large boulders. The vines are 40 to 90 years old. The yield is usually less than 30 hl / ha due to strict pruning and a rigorous vendange verte. Christophe also works almost exclusively organically. Janasse's big break came in 2007, when their Châteauneuf du Pape "Veilles Vignes" scored 100 points Parker !! All their wines score excellent year after year. The quality of this domain is so great that even their "ordinary" Côtes-du-Rhône "is already highly regarded worldwide!
