Description
Situated at the highest point of the hills surrounding the village of Chateauneuf du Pape. It is the largest (private) company in the Appellation. At the top in terms of quality for years. The company belongs to the Abeil and Fabre families. In addition to Chateauneuf du Pape, Lirac and Côtes du Rhône are also produced there. With regard to the Chateauneuf du Pape, there are different labels such as "vignoble abeile" and "vignoble Fabre", but the wine is always the same. Château Mont-Redon makes broad-shouldered class wines.
The Chateauneuf-du-pape from Mont Redon is a very strong wine from a great year. The 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape consists mainly of Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvèdre and then Cinsault, Counoise, Muscardin & Vaccarèse. The maturation took place 45% in tanks and 55% in oak barrels for 12 months. On the nose we smell numerous herbs and hints of leather, with sweet red fruit, cinnamon and truffle. This medium body wine is beautifully balanced and perfect to drink.
Around Châteauneuf-du-Pape there is a landscape of gently rolling slopes and sometimes large plateaux. The characteristic soil is reddish earth covered with round pebbles, small and large: Galets or Caillous roulés. These were transported by the Rhône glacier at the time. In some places the cobblestone avenue is one and a half to two meters thick. The stones ensure that the grapes become completely ripe, because during the day they collect solar heat.

A gentle mélange of ripe cherries, dusty earth and dried spices mingle on the nose of the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape. A blend of approximately 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 8.5% Mourvèdre and 1.5% other permitted varieties, it's full-bodied, showing some silky tannins on the cocoa-tinged finish.
Mont Redon is the appellation's largest vineyard owner, with 100 hectares under vine. Most of the parcels are on red clay and galets roulés, with smaller portions on sandy or limestone terroirs. Starting with the 2016 vintage, there is a special cuvée called le Plateau (de Mont Redon), which comes exclusively from the galets. It sees more oak and a higher proportion of new oak, but because of the concentration in the 2016 and 2017 vintages, it's not especially noticeable. The wine is a step above the large-production cuvée tradition in quality, but it's yet to be released. It's in keeping with the winemaking philosophy espoused by Pierre Fabre, who told me, "Color for me isn't quality-linked, it's style-linked. Most important is complexity and length." These aren't big, extracted wines but wines that feel comfortable and balanced.
