Sacha Lichine settled in La Motte-en-Provence in 2006 and bought Château d'Esclans from a Swedish family. Sacha is the son of the world-famous winemaker and writer Alexis Lichine. It may sound arrogant, but his goal was to produce the best rosé in the world, one that could rival the top Montrachets. To realize this ambition, he entrusted the vinification to Patrick Léon, who was the winemaker at Mouton Rothschild for 23 years. As a result, for example, Whispering Angel has been selling out in no time for years. In late November, Château d'Esclans was named 'The European Winery of the Year 2014' by Wine Enthusiast magazine. It is the first time in history that a winery producing primarily rosé wines has been awarded this 'Oscar for wines'.
The Whispering Angel is one of the most popular rosés internationally and, alongside the cult rosé Garrus, is the wine with which Chateau d'Esclans has gained worldwide fame. This rosé owes its name to the small chapel on the estate where two whispering angels are depicted on the wall. This image is also featured on the label of the Whispering Angel.
The Whispering Angel has the typical light grey-pink colour that characterises a Provence rosé. The rosé has an aromatic bouquet, excelling in minerality and elegance. A beautiful glass of wine, elegant, broad and rich with a lovely freshness and light spiciness. Intense flavour with aromas of apricots, redcurrants and strawberries.
1.5-liter Magnum version
The vineyards of Chateau d'Esclans are very favorably situated on a south-westerly slope on clayey and calcareous soil. The Garrus is made exclusively from 80-year-old Grenache and Rolle vines. The grapes are first tasted, then hand-picked very early in the morning (to prevent spontaneous fermentation due to the heat) and sorted for quality up to three times. Maceration takes place between 10 and 12°C, ensuring maximum fruitiness and, moreover, a selection of pure free-run juice for pressing. A full, eight-month Burgundian Batonnage takes place in 600-liter oak barrels, with the temperature fully controlled between 12 and 16°C.

Château d'Esclans is an impressively large (267 hectares) wine estate in La Motte, southeast of the town of Draguignan. It was bought by Sacha Lichine in 2006 and covers 44 hectares of vines of different varieties with an average age of eighty years. Using the advice and knowledge of Patrick Léon (ex-Château Mouton Rothschild) and international consultant Michel Rolland, a series of five types of rosé and red wine is produced. We at Château d'Esclans de Whispering Angel, Les Clans and Garrus. All these oak-aged rosés are without doubt among the best in the world.
