Persoonlijke gegevens
The Condado de Haza estate, named after the nearby town of Haza, owns nearly 200 hectares of vineyards planted with Tempranillo vines at an altitude of 800-900 meters above sea level. Condado de Haza is owned by Alfonso Fernandez, one of the most famous winemakers in Spain, who was effectively one of the founders of modern Ribera del Duero wine and put this region on the international map with the Pesquera wines.
The Condado de Haza - Reserva is another magnificent wine from Alejandro Fernández (Pesquera). The best grapes, after being hand-picked and processed into base wine, are aged for 22 months in French oak barrels. This gives the wine unprecedented depth and structure. Undergrowth, dark fruit, and spices play with the nose. Full-bodied on the palate with delicious ripe fruit, cocoa, and mineral notes. A wine that only gets better after a few extra years of bottle aging. And when you finally open it, you naturally want something nice to pair with it, so try it with duck breast, small game, or grilled red meat. Just be sure to decant it first, of course.

Orange peel, boysenberries, dark cherries and bay leaves on the nose. It’s firm and chewy with a full body and lovely dark fruit character. Fleshy and long, with plenty of intention and focus. Drink or hold.

From: Ribera del Duero: A Shifting Frontier for Spanish Wine (Nov 2023)
The 2018 Reserva is a 100% Tempranillo from Roa in Ribera del Duero, aged for 18 months in French oak barrels. Purple in hue. The nose combines liqueur-like notes with blueberry and blackberry aromas against a backdrop of vanilla and cedar. In the mouth, it delivers an indulgent, juicy experience with a high-pitched flavor profile. This is a well-crafted Ribera wine.

In terms of success, only Vega Sicilia from Ribera del Duero can compete with the Pesquera wines of Alejandro Fernández. Fernández makes wines of a rich and exceptional character at relatively realistic prices, and he is therefore the archetype of a 'success story' in modern times. Born in 1932, he left school at age 14 and was brought up in the fields. His 'curriculum vitae' therefore includes professions such as carpenter, farrier and inventor of numerous agricultural machines that were supposed to facilitate the processing of the beet fields, among other things. However, he dreamed with his wife Esperanza and their 4 daughters to grow wine with international allures.
In 1972, through his agricultural machinery business, he obtained a loan that enabled him to launch into wine growing. One of his first assistants (and mentor), the oenologist Teofilo Reyes, will have a defining influence on the style of the wine by putting more emphasis on the ripeness of the grapes than ripening in barrel. At a time when Spanish viticulture is declining and vines are being torn out to be replaced by beets, Fernández plants vines and markets his first wine in 1975. Unlike most Spanish wines that age and sell in cask cellars when they reach their maturity, the Pesquera wine matures in the bottle following the example of the great Bordeaux. Very sober ruby-purple color, a lot of fruit, typical wood, remarkable maturity and intensity, with a beautiful structure and a lot of tanines, because of these characteristics the Pesquera wines are considered as a current measure of the potential of the Spanish wines.
