Description
With a wine tradition dating back to 1870, the Eguren family is among the absolute top with wines such as Sierra Cantabria, San Vicente Manor, Numanthia-Termes (recently sold to LVMH group). La Nieta is Eguren's top wine and flagship and comes from a very small 1.75 hectare vineyard planted in 1975 in Páganos (Laguardia, Rioja Alava) at an altitude of 525 meters above sea level. The soil is very calcareous clay soil. LaNieta means "Granddaughter" and is a project that Eguren started after the birth of his granddaughter.
The grapes are fermented in four 1000-litre oak barrels and the wine is aged in new French barriques for 16 months. The nose is subtle, ripe without being overpowering. La Nieta is at the same time a very powerful and very elegant wine, a combination that is not so easy to find. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a very mineral feel. The wine can be drunk now but only with a hearty steak but you will certainly be rewarded if you leave it for a few more years. Only 5000 bottles of La Nieta were produced and this wine is among the best in Spain. Parker also writes about La Nieta "Nieta has been the star again"
The Spanish winery Viñedos de Paganos is an exclusive winery and is one of the magnificent wineries of Hermanos Eguren.

The 2021 La Nieta is among the finest wines in its powerful, ripe and generously oaked, modern style of red Rioja. It's a single-vineyard Tempranillo with 14.05% alcohol, a pH of 3.63 and 5.8 grams of acidity. It comes from the 1.75-hectare vineyard that named the wine. It was planted in 1975 on silt, clay and sandstone soils in Páganos (Laguardia) at 525 meters above sea level and worked biodynamically (but not certified). The hand-destemmed grapes fermented in small 2,000-liter oak vats with yeasts selected from their vineyards and matured in new French oak barrels for 15 months. It felt very balanced, a little shy and undeveloped, elegant and fresh in this slightly cooler year. The grapes ripened slowly and had a full development of aromas and flavors, making the wine more nuanced and complex, while the palate kept very good balance with its freshness. The tannins are very complete and elegant. It opened up with time in the glass to more floral aromas, making it the most perfumed of the wines from the Eguren family that I tasted this time. 5,000 bottles were filled in July 2023.

A naturally concentrated red with a lifted chalky touch to its extremely healthy fruit. Blackberries, blueberries, fine spices, blue flowers, violets, dark olives and minerals. So fresh, juicy and sophisticated, with filigreed tannins that support and melt. Long, subtle and bright. Very linear and elegant in quality. Drink or hold.

From: The Many Riojas of Rioja: A Tale of Forking Paths (Apr 2024)
The 2021 La Nieta is Tempranillo sourced from a tiny plot in Páganos. Aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, this purplish wine features red fruit aromas with sour cherry and cassis notes, along with wild herbal hints. Dry and fairly creamy, the fine-grained palate lingers with a juicy, taut mouthfeel. This delicate and nuanced modern Rioja adopts a more reductive approach, conveying a compact and streamlined style.

The Spanish winery Viñedos de Paganos is an exclusive winery in the medieval village of Laguardia and is one of Hermanos Eguren's beautiful wineries. The winery is located in the subregion Rioja Alavesa at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria at about 600 meters altitude. The area is surrounded by dolmens, archaeological sites, chapels and old medieval churches.
Paganos winery has an underground cellar, located under the vineyards, carved into the rock.
The area has an Atlantic climate with continental nuances, and is sheltered from the cold winds from the north by the Sierra de Cantabria mountains. The soils of this estate, calcareous loam or clay loam with a high minerality in texture, give the vineyard, and therefore the wine, a unique mineral character with exceptional personality. Under this soil you can find a sandstone substrate where the roots are perfectly integrated.
Paganos winery was founded in 1998 by Marcos and Miguel Eguren, with the aim of producing great wines with great intrinsic characteristics and personality. The beautiful combination of climate, soil and vine varieties made this mission a complete success.
