Description
If all the forces in a winery are concentrated in a single drop, it should meet the highest quality standards. The Podere Orma with its wine of the same name fully meets this claim. After the fashion entrepreneur Antonio Moretti had already proven that he could run a wine company with a lot of skill with his Tenuta Sette Ponti near Arezzo in the Chianti region, he started the branch in Castagneto Carducci in Bolgheri. Despite the very small bottle production, the estate has long acquired a leading position among the 50 wineries in Bolgheri. In addition to its headquarters and branch in Bolgheri, the busy Moretti in Tuscany owns Poggio al Lupo (Maremma) and Feudo Maccari, a company in Sicily.
Orma means footprint and is believed to embody the clearly defined requirements of independence and quality that Moretti believes the style of a top Bolgheri should meet. This wine, made from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, is without a doubt one of the modern classics from Bolgheri. As a direct neighbor of the Tenuta dell 'Ornellaia, the passionate winemaker has access to an almost identical terroir and therefore also has a starting position bordering on perfection, which can be tasted in the glass. The Supertuscan Orma is pure power and elegance.
The Podere Orma vineyard is located not far from the sea on deep gravel and clay soils with little sand, an excellent subsoil in areas with a warm climate. The vines face southwest. The nearby Tyrrhenian Sea compensates for high temperature differences and ensures a pleasant summer or mild winter climate.
The 2019 Orma is a blend of 50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc. The Orma 2019 opens with a soothing display of ripe fruit with blackberry, candied cherry, spices, white pepper and even a hint of red chilli flake. The mouthfeel is round and soft with a hint of sour cherry, beautifully ripe and fleshy material that accompanies the wine without becoming too heavy. Still firm tannins in its youth, so give 2-3 years to develop further and then this is a wine that will remain in perfect (perhaps even better) condition for decades.

A blend of 50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Orma opens to a soothing display of ripe fruit with blackberry, candied cherry, spice, white pepper and even a speck of red chili flake. The mouthfeel is round and soft with a pop of sour cherry. The vineyards are planted in soils rich in pebbles and clay with a little sand at 60 meters above sea level. Some 34,000 bottles were produced.
Next year, Orma will release the 2020 Bolgheri Superiore. This will technically be a new wine.

This is a tight and powerful Orma with solid tannins that beautifully frame the fruit in the wine. Full-bodied and focused with intense structure and fruit character. Perhaps the best Orma ever. Give this four or five years to open. Try after 2025.

Antonio Moretti has been able to buy a piece of vineyard right next to Tenuta dell Ornellaia. The vineyard is used exclusively for the grapes. The wines are made at Moretti's other company, Tenuta Sette Ponti, located near Arezzo. The Orma is Moretti's showpiece.
