Description
Domaine Weinbach, also known as Clos des Capucins, is not only one of the very best domaines in Alsace, its refined and concentrated white wines are even considered among the best in the world. Grapes are picked by hand with very strict selection. at perfect ripeness. In the vinification cellar, after an extremely slow and careful pressing of the grapes, a spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with wild (grape's own) yeasts takes place on old very large oak barrels. The wines remain here until June or July to slowly reduce fermentation in order to maximize authenticity and complexity. This entire process takes place entirely according to strict biodynamic rules and regulations.
The Schlossberg has an exceptional terroir and gives a very pure fruit expression. In the glass, the Riesling Schlossberg Grand Cru is golden-yellow in color. In the nose we distinguish expressive aromas of grapefruit, ripe pear and tobacco. The attack on the palate is fruit intense and elegant, broad and round. The Schlossberg combines its juicy, well-concentrated Riesling fruit with the mineral soul of the granite cru terroir of Weinbach and ends with lemon flavors and salty notes. The aftertaste is very long and complex; Here both the salty mineral character of the granite soil and the ripe fruit are reflected. This is an incredibly promising Riesling with a wonderful storage potential as befits a large Grandcru Riesling.
Delicious as an aperitif, oysters, lobster, sea fish such as sole and turbot, turkey and Bresse chicken with mushrooms, sushi and sashimi.

2020 Domaine Weinbach Grand Cru Schlossberg Riesling
RP 94
Reviewed by: Stephan Reinhardt
Drink Date: 2022 - 2045
Bottled in December last year, the 2020 Grand Cru Schlossberg Riesling offers pure and refined but also intense, lush and generous tropical fruit with passion fruit, papaya and mango aromas intertwined with the crystalline finesse and flintiness of the Schlossberg granite. Lush and round on the palate, this is a precise, saline and finely grippy Riesling with fine tannins and intense, sustainable fruit with stimulating bitters on the finish. It's salivating due to the really fine and crystalline acidity. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2022.

DOMAINE WEINBACH RIESLING ALSACE GRAND CRU SCHLOSSBERG 2022
Score

How can you resist the delicacy and finesse of this super-elegant dry riesling? So light on its feet, in spite of the major stony minerality that reaches every nook and cranny of your palate. So pristine and straight in the crystaline finish that doesn’t want to stop. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.

From: Alsace 2022 Whites – A Lucky Escape (Apr 2024)
The 2022 Riesling Schlossberg Grand Cru blends its reductive, flinty smokiness with lemon zest on the nose. With more air, white and yellow peach start smiling through and get stronger and juicier on the palate. The pale peach juiciness appears in full purity on the palate, framed with a pleasantly astringent pithiness that makes the mouth water. More peach and fruit and fin freshness are just within reach. The finish is shorter than usual but bone-dry. This is a picture of stone. (Bone-Dry)

Domaine Weinbach, also known as Clos des Capucins, is not only one of the best Alsace domains, the refined and concentrated white wines are considered to be among the best in the world. The winery, which takes its name from the stream that flows through the vineyards on the spot, is located between the villages of Kaysersberg and Kientzheim and has a history that goes back a long way. In 860, the Abbey d'Etival obtained through a donation land that now belongs to the current vineyards of Domaine Weinbach.
A wall was built around a part of this plot in the early seventeenth century by Capuchin monks. This 5 hectare vineyard is the still existing Clos des Capucins. After the French Revolution, the vineyards and monastery were expropriated and sold by the state. Ultimately, it was the Faller brothers, two tanners from nearby Kaysersberg, who bought and refurbished the dilapidated abbey and its Clos des Capucins in 1898. Théo Faller continued the work of his father and uncle with great energy. He bought parts of surrounding Grand Cru vineyards such as Furstentumen, Schlossberg, Mambourg and Marckrain and brought the wines of Domaine Weinbach to an unprecedented level. With the third generation, the wines got even more refinement and depth, because from 1988 they first switched to organic viticulture and then in 2005 the choice was made to do the 28 hectares of vineyards and winemaking entirely according to biodynamic principles. The result is amazing; the white wines now have an unprecedented minerality, finesse and concentration. It is the result of natural preparations, acting according to the position of the moon and stars, drastic pruning at an early stage, hand picking grapes with optimal ripeness, with very low yields and preferably with the first effects of the noble rot and further a vinification with as little intervention as possible.
