Description
The 2019 Carter Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard The Grand Daddy is an impressive Napa Valley wine that comes from a specific parcel within the famous Kalon vineyard, planted with Clone 4. This wine is noted for its unique aroma profile, with floral hints, licorice notes, black cherry and earthy nuances that are characteristic of To Kalon. The wine is distinguished by unique aromas, including floral hints and licorice notes, in addition to the characteristic black cherry and earthy notes (loam) that are so typical of Kalon.
This particular block has taken full advantage of the vintage, resulting in a ripe, full-bodied wine that feels bigger, richer, longer and more concentrated than some of Carter's other 2019 bottlings.
The History of the Kalon Vineyard:
The Beckstoffer portion of the historic original To Kalon Vineyard in the Oakville AVA was purchased from Beaulieu Vineyard in 1993. Beaulieu had purchased the property from the Crabb estate in 1940 and named it their Beaulieu Vineyard No. 4. Napa pioneer Hamilton Crabb first planted the vineyard in 1868 and since then it has produced some of the finest red grapes in the Napa Valley. Replanted with multiple clones of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc by Beckstoffer from 1994-1997 with modern trellis and tighter vine spacing after phylloxera, the vineyard produces several luxury award-winning single vineyard wines. These Cabernet Sauvignon wines include Schrader Cellars, Paul Hobbs, TOR, Realm and of course Carter Cellars

Carter's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard The Grand Daddy comes from a parcel planted to Clone 4. The unique aromas include floral hints and whiffs of licorice, plus To Kalon's hallmark black cherries and loam. The vintage treated this block well, yielding a ripe, full-bodied wine that seems bigger, richer, longer and more concentrated than some of Carter's other 2019 bottlings.
Launched by Mark Carter in 1998 with Nils Venge as the winemaker, Carter Cellars has had access to fruit from Beckstoffer's portion of To Kalon since 2000. With that sort of longevity in the vineyard, it means some of the best blocks make it into the fermenters destined for this label. Having multiple cuvées from Beckstoffer's Las Piedras and To Kalon makes things more complicated for consumers than perhaps they need to be, but the wines do all taste slightly different. These 2019 Cabernets were made by Mike Smith, but they were blended and finished by Russell Bevan, who has recently taken over the consulting duties. As much as I admire the work of these two talented winemakers, I can't help but think that having one winemaker's vision and control from start to finish is likely to yield better results, so I'm looking forward to trying future vintages.

From: The 2019 Napa Valley Cabernets: A Deep Dive (Jan 2022)
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard The Grand Daddy is rich, powerful and explosive, with soaring aromatics and plenty of the vertical structure that is such a signature of this site. Dark blue/purplish fruit, rose petal, sage, lavender and spice build beautifully over time. I especially admire the aromatic intensity and vibrancy here. The Grand Daddy is a fabulous wine from Mark Carter and winemaker Mike Smith.
- By Antonio Galloni on October 2021
This is a stellar set of 2019s from Mark Carter and winemaker Mike Smith. The highlights are pretty obvious, so I will focus my comments on the new and lesser-known wines. There are two new offerings, The Haze, which is mostly young vines from Fortuna, a stunning new Cabernet from Missouri Hopper. Speaking of Fortuna, it is the wine in this range that offers the most quality for the money, in my view. The wines are, as usual, big, opulent and full of richness. Russell Bevan is the winemaker starting with the 2021 vintage. It will be interesting to see where he takes these wines, which have been consistently among my favorites in the more opulent style of Napa Valley.

Wijnhuis
Carter Cellars wijnhuis in Napa Valley
Binnen To Kalon bottelt Carter meerdere cuvées met een eigen signatuur, zoals The Grand Daddy (van Clone 4), The O.G. en The Three Kings.
Klimaat in Napa Valley
Interessante feitjes over Carter Cellars
- To Kalon levert meerdere Carter-bottelingen (o.a. The Grand Daddy, The O.G., The Three Kings); Las Piedras brengt o.a.
