Description
The Rioja of Benjamin de Rothschild y Vega Sicilia Macan. The color is ruby red with a very fruity nose but the great thing is that everything is in it but nothing stands out!! In the mouth the Macan is massive and tight without it really being heavy. It has really velvety tannins.

Pablo Álvarez of Vega Sicilia decided to participate in a new project in Rioja. As early as 2000, they started (secretly) with the purchase of very old vineyards in Sonsierra, part of the Rioja Alavesa. As a partner, they found the Swiss banker Benjamin de Rothschild. Not the Rothschild of Lafite or Mouton, but of LCF Edmond de Rothschild Asset Management, owner of Château Clarke and Château Malmaison in Listrac and Moulis respectively, partner in the South African Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons and also in possession of vineyards in Argentina.
Álvarez and the Rothschilds invested around 26 million euros in, among other things, the purchase and development of 110 hectares of vineyards and the construction of a new production facility in Samaniego. A large part (65ha) of the vineyards is located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, where the people are known as Maçanes. It is therefore no coincidence that the new company bears the name Macán.
Macán markets two wines, the Macán and the Macán Clásico, both a full-blooded Rioja of 100% Tempranillo. The Clásico is the basic wine, the Mácan the prestige cuvée, avoiding the term Reserva.
Macan is made from 100% tempranillo from a vineyard of about 30 years old. The wine has been aged for 18 months on French oak (70% new and 30% used). After this ageing it has had another 3 years of bottle maturation. This Macan is the top model where one consciously chooses to avoid the too often abused term Reserva. The color is ruby red with a very fruity nose but the great thing is that everything is in it but nothing stands out!! In the mouth the Macan is solid and tight without it becoming really heavy. It has really velvety tannins, very balanced and very elegant. A top Rioja but anyway this also comes from Vega Sicilia and Rothschild.

2019 was a more concentrated and powerful year that was warmer and drier; it was saved by the 80 liters of rain in the first half of September, and they tried to select the higher-altitude vineyards to have more freshness. They reduced the amount of new barrique (55%) and increased the use of foudre (45%) for the élevage of the 2019 Macán. It fermented in stainless steel with 10% of their own yeasts. It has a moderate 14% alcohol, mellow acidity and good freshness and balance. 2019 was a dry and warm year when they did a soft vinification to avoid harsh tannins. The wine is very powerful and dense, with a big structure and plenty of tannins. The oak is still noticeable in the aromatics. Give it some more time in bottle, and enjoy with powerful food. 87,377 bottles, 2,583 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in August 2021.
I tasted the 2024 releases from this joint venture between Benjamin de Rothschild and Vega Sicilia in Rioja as part of the tasting of the full Tempos Vega Sicilia Group (Vega Sicilia, Pintia, Alión, Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia), and I'm including them here too for context and completeness of the Rioja report.
They introduced Garnacha and Graciano in the blend, starting with the 2020 vintage, and began use of 20,000-liter oak foudres in 2021. 2020 is an elegant vintage, while 2019 is more powerful.

Attractive aromas of cloves with blackberries, blueberries, cedar and hints of chocolate. It’s full- to medium-bodied with fine yet chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Sleek and muscular. Needs three to five years to soften but already impressive. Try after 2026.
