Description
The vineyard is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (15%), Malbec (5%) and Petit Verdot (5%). The percentage of each grape variety that ends up in the final blend varies from season to season, depending on factors such as fertility and fruit yield. The most important influence they have on the quality of this wine is determining the right moment to harvest each variety. This affects not only the flavors, but also the quality of the tannins, the acidity and the alcohol content.
These grape varieties ferment on their skins for approximately 12-14 days, followed by 22 months of barrel maturation. Of the blend, 25% is matured in large oak barrels (1500L or larger) and 30% in new barriques (225L). The remaining wine is matured in 2-5 year old barriques. Minimal fining and filtration is done before bottling.
The Quintet is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and a touch of Petit Verdot. The nose opens with notes of red cherry, violets, spices and a hint of earthy undertones. On the palate, red fruits dominate, interwoven with spicy French oak. However, it is mainly the refined, fine-grained tannins that characterize this wine and provide an impressive structure and persistent length in the taste. Insane storage potential.

2018 summer was a warm season that was high yielding, so fruit dropping was essential in order to maintain balance in the finished wines. Here, the 2018 Quintet has been in bottle for three plus years and is perfectly sure about it's savory fruits on display. It has redcurrant more than cherry/pomegranate, with layers of tobacco, star anise, five spice and a hint of sumac. And the tannins perform in a way not unlike the folds on the underside of a mushroom—impossibly fine, ordered and detailed. 13% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.

This is a great edition of this standard bearer for elegant Yarra Valley claret. The nose is detailed and fresh with a central theme of red and dark berries, cedar, cocoa powder, violet-like florals and light leafy notes. The palate has such expressiveness with impressively vibrant red cherries, plums and berries, all in unison with faultlessly fine, long and seamless tannins. This is delicious now and will age so well. The greatest Quintet ever? Certainly in my lifetime! Drink or hold.

Shimmering ruby-red. Intensely perfumed red fruit preserve, incense notes lift from the glass. Palate-staining, finely etched red and blue fruit, rose pastille, licorice and espresso flavors deftly blend depth and vivacity. Finishes youthfully chewy and precise, with steadily building tannins, resonating red fruit, spice and floral notes and remarkable persistence.
