Description
The Stormin' Pinot Noir is handcrafted from a unique selection of plots and three clones from all corners of the Maggy Hawk vineyard. Upon arrival at the winery, all grapes are sorted into their individual plots and given five days of cold soaking before fermentation begins. After completion of fermentation, the fruit is pressed very gently - the free-flowing wine is kept separate from the pressings and transferred to barrels. The wine is allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation naturally before being aged for 18 months in 50% new French oak barrels. Finished without clarification and filtration.
The Stormin' Pinot Noir is a powerful expression of the Maggy Hawk vineyard. With a unique blend of plots and clones, this wine captures the essence of the natural environment and the winemaker's craftsmanship. The cold soaking process for five days gives the grapes the opportunity to reveal their intense flavors, while the gentle pressing and separation of free-flowing wine and pressings ensure a subtle and refined character.
The natural malolactic fermentation adds depth and complexity to the Stormin' Pinot Noir, while the 18 months aging in 50% new French oak barrels gives the wine a luscious texture and a hint of vanilla. The decision to leave the wine unfined and unfiltered is a testament to the pure and untamed nature of this Pinot Noir. A true powerhouse that reflects the stormy passion of the winemaker and makes every sip an unforgettable experience.
Winemaker's note: “Big, rich and assertive. Stormin' offers intense fresh blackberry and Mission fig complimented by bergamot tea, thyme and pennyroyal. A strong wine with muscular tannins and great acidity creates a dynamic and expressive palate while balancing the powerful flavors. A perfect wine for richer meals or to be enjoyed on its own.”

Refined, with well-honed dark fruit and dried flavors that are supported by racy acidity and fine-grained tannins. Offers rich forest floor notes midpalate, with a finish loaded with Asian spice and minerally accents.

The 2018 Pinot Noir Stormin' is the most exuberant wine in the range. It shows terrific depth and density, while remaining transparent and light on its feet. Dark red/purplish berry fruit, rose petal, lavender, spice and mint build in this expansive, beautifully expressive Pinot. A dollop of whole clusters (7%) adds a touch of character without being especially evident.

This is an attractive set of wines from Maggy Hawk. As always, the Pinots are done in a style that emphasizes aromatics and mid-weight structure. One of the most intriguing wines in this range is the White Pinot Noir, a Pinot fermented off the skins.

Led with Clone 777, the 2019 Pinot Noir Stormin' Estate Vineyard has a darker fruit profile, with black raspberry, rich mineral earth, and cedar. Full cherry fruit floods the palate, with baking spice, fine tannins, and a long finish. Hold this another year or so and drink 2024-2034.
92 - Wine Enthusiast
Fresh red-cherry and raspberry flavors ride a full body and modest tannins in this ripe and mouthfilling wine. It's just brimming with yummy fruit, spicy cinnamon and nutmeg, and a tempting, lightly tannic texture.

In the beautiful Anderson Valley you will find Maggy Hawk - an estate that focuses on creating wines that highlight the purity of the grape. All their wines have a profound elegance and have a sense of place.
Winemaker Sarah Wuethrich harnesses the diversity of each and every vineyard, each able to add another layer to the characteristic of the final wine. Each has its own style and story to tell. Together, they offer a unique view of the remote Anderson Valley. The plots are vinified separately as much as possible, and as little intervention as possible is made in the cellars in order to highlight the unique character of each plot as much as possible. Sarah grew up in California and was inspired by her father, a 'hobby winemaker', to pursue winemaking training. While working at various wineries in California, her interest in 'cool climate' wines grew.
The nearby ocean provides coolness to the valley, regularly filling the valley with a thick layer of fog. Nature plays the leading role here: small vineyards are surrounded by large coastal redwoods and large boulders. The vineyard sites are often steep, with low fertility, poor soils. But it is precisely these extreme conditions in which the grapes feel at home. The cool climate and poor soil provide grapes with a nice balance between ripeness, aromas and freshness. Wines from this area are pure and have a beautiful elegance.
