Description
2018 marks an important step in the conversion of our vineyard to sustainable viticulture. The weather conditions created strong parasite pressure, requiring extreme vigilance. The management of the vineyards was therefore complex, but the direction of our environmental approach was firmly maintained. The good weather and heat at the end of summer, similar to 2009, ensured the vintage, which expressed incredible potential in the cellar. The year started with a very rainy winter. The spring was wet and warm and the bud burst came late. Early flowering occurred just before some rain showers in early June, which led to minor problems with poor fruit set. The very strong pressure of mildew did not distract us from our move towards sustainable viticulture and we accepted the prospect of a significant drop in yields.
The hot and dry summer was characterized by strong water stress from the end of July. These weather conditions tended to limit the growth of the berries, but greatly increased their concentration. The harvest took place under perfect conditions. In the cellar, given the small size of the grapes (20% below average), the ratio of skins to juice was definitely in favor of the skins. The first extractions, more carefully controlled than ever, quickly produced highly concentrated juices of exceptional richness. The painstaking work on the pressed wine continued: 6 batches of very high quality complemented the 61 batches of free range and enriched the basis for our blends.
The first tastings show the signs of a very great vintage, a subtle combination of the fruity aromatic profile of the 2009 and the precision of the 2016. The grapes were picked between September 17th and October 5th. The composition of the 2018 vintage consists of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20& Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The wine has a deep and intense ruby red color. The nose is delicate and very complex. With aeration, the nose reveals aromas of black fruits and white flowers, accompanied by subtle smoky notes. In the mouth the attack is full of exceptional aromatic richness. Powerful and silky, it offers incredible length and finesse.
FACT: Under the tab: Attachment you will find the official fact sheet and we will send it to you digitally when you order this wine. It is also worth mentioning that we purchase the (Bordeaux) wines directly and never purchase them through intermediaries because we do not know which journeys the wine has made and how it has been treated. The wines come from the cellars of the Chateau directly to our conditioned Warehouse in Dordrecht where all our wines are stored.

The 2018 Montrose is a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Very deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a good amount of air to unlock the vibrant scents of crushed blackberries, preserved plums and cassis with suggestions of star anise, cedar chest, underbrush, Indian spices and iron ore, plus an emerging waft of violets. The full-bodied palate features the most exquisitely ripe tannins, offering a rock-solid backbone with tons of freshness lifting the taut, muscular fruit, finishing long and mineral laced. Going back to this wine over a period of hours and then days further reveals a Montrose of great opulence, richness and depth. Incidentally, the IPT level this year is 82, which indicates a very high level of tannins, and yet they are so, so ripe. The alcohol is around 14.5%. But sit back, close your eyes and forget the numbers—this is pure hedonism in its youth with a fantastic 40+ years of cellaring ahead of it, during the course of which do not be at all surprised if you are blown away by a three-digit experience.
“Yes, the early part of the season was a challenge,” Communications Manager Hélène Brochet confessed. “Sixty-five percent of the vineyard is organic. We didn’t give up—we stuck to it, and now we have decided to go 100% organic. 2018 proved to us we could be organic without suffering too much. The organic blocks needed 15 treatments this year. Non-organic required 12, which is not such a big difference. The results were the same.”
In the end, yields were still pretty low at Montrose at just 26 hectoliters per hectare, mainly due to coulure (flowering/fruit set problems) and smaller berries (20% below average) rather than mildew.
“2018 was hotter than 2016,” Brochet went on to tell me. “We had very tiny berries. The juice was completely black the first day of harvest. Extraction had to go easy—we had to be careful to extract only what we needed. We had to stop the extraction early. We created six different levels of press wines."

Purity and beauty on the nose with blackberry, blueberry, raspberry, crushed-stone and violet character. A full-bodied red with masses of polished tannins and intense flavors of currants and blackberries. Juicy finish. Super depth to this. Goes on for minutes. Try after 2027.

The 2018 Montrose balances finesse and power to a degree I don't think I have seen in a recent young Montrose. The 2018 has plenty of depth, intensity and thrust - all signatures of Montrose - but it also has a striking sense of elegance. Crème de cassis, lavender, spice, menthol and licorice meld together in the glass. Although it is naturally very young, the 2018 Montrose appears to have a tremendous future. The blend is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, which is to say more Cabernet and less Merlot than is the norm. Readers will have to be patient with the 2018, but it is a stellar wine in the making. Montrose presents an en primeur sample aged 100% in new oak (while the final wine is aging in 60% new barrels) to show a wine that is more ready to taste young.

“In terms of rain, heat and sunshine, 2018 is very similar to 2009,” Montrose CEO Hervé Berland recounted. With 75-80% of the property now farmed biodynamically, Montrose had its challenges with mildew in 2018. “Ultimately, dehydration in summer was a bigger factor than mildew when it comes to yields. Our production at Montrose was 25 hectoliters per hectare are opposed to our recent historical average of about 35,” explained Technical Director Vincent Decup.

Château Montrose is one of the most prestigious Médoc chateaus. Especially since the wealthy brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues bought the chateau in 2006 and started a rigorous 'makeover'. They tackled absolutely everything from vineyard to cellar. The team is also being strengthened, including with Hervé Berland, who says goodbye to his position as director at Château Mouton-Rothschild to lead this ambitious project. Quality has skyrocketed ever since and the last few vintages Château Montrose has consistently been among the very best wines in Bordeaux; a great achievement! Part of the major quality improvement is a 'parcelic' approach, in which the vineyard is divided into small pieces, each of which is assessed, vinified and raised separately. The selection options have increased enormously as a result. Such that, in addition to a first and second wine, a third wine has also seen the light.
Chateau Montrose makes powerful wines that have a long life ahead of them. Although very tannic, the elegance and especially intensity is memorable. This one of the very best St. Estèphe wines has the 2nd Grand Cru Class status but could easily compete in the highest 1st Cru class. Since the 1989 harvest, followed by a 100-point score by Robert Parker in 1990, Montrose has earned a worldwide reputation and ranks among the greatest Bordeaux.
