Description
This castle will be called Ch. Called Capbern, while it used to be Ch. Capbern was called Gasqueton. It is now also called: Château Capbern - THE OTHER PROPERTY OF CALON SÉGUR because it is part of Calon Segur and is also made by the same wine team.
It is the third wine, an integral member of the Calon Ségur family and it comes mainly from the young vines of the estate with a balanced blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Previously known as La Chapelle de Calon, then Le Saint-Estèphe de Calon Ségur, it was renamed Le C de Calon Ségur since the 2019 vintage. C like the third letter of the alphabet, for the third label of the estate. C like “Coeur”, the heart, symbol of the love that the Marquis de Ségur brought to the domain, and a unique distinguishing mark of our bottles.
C like Calon.
The Capbern 2018 is composed of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot and has an alcohol content of 14.6%. matured for 16 months in barriques, of which 60% new. Deep purple-black in color, it jumps out of the glass with vibrant scents of black raspberries, kirsch and fresh blackcurrants with nuances of cedar chest, pencil and forest floor plus a hint of lavender. Full, rich and packed with juicy fruit, with a firm line of grainy tannins and lots of freshness, ending with a spicy lift.

The 2018 Capbern is composed of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot and comes in at 14.6% alcohol. It's anticipated to age for 16 months in barriques, 60% new. Deep purple-black in color, it leaps from the glass with vibrant scents of black raspberries, kirsch and fresh blackcurrants with nuances of cedar chest, pencil lead and forest floor plus a waft of lavender. Full-bodied, rich and packed with juicy fruit, it has a firm line of grainy tannins and loads of freshness, finishing with an herbal lift.
“2018 was complicated to vinify because of the potentially high alcohols,” Laurent Dufau, Managing Director of Calon-Ségur and Capbern informed me. “Also, you had to be very gentle with extraction. You had to be soft, so as to not extract too much. The alcohol percentage of the Merlot was concerning—some came in at 16% potential alcohol! And the Cabernet Franc this year was amazing on this terroir.” Merlot was picked from September 19 to 25. The Cabernets came in September 26 to October 5. Petit Verdot came in on October 8th. Yields were pretty good here on average in 2018: 41 hectoliters per hectare.
This year marks the final stages/completion of years of vineyard restructuring, new aging cellars and a gravity-fed vat room at Château Calon-Ségur. Most notably, they have been increasing vine density and slowly working on bringing more Cabernet Sauvignon rather than Merlot on line, as was the blend traditionally. No doubt about, quality at Calon-Ségur has been on an upward trajectory in recent years!

From: Bordeaux 2018: Back in Black (Apr 2019)
The 2018 Capbern is expressive, nuanced and inviting, with lovely upfront fruit. In 2018, Capbern is a bit compact and tightly wound, but it also has a good deal of persistence. The Cabernet is quite marked in the 2018, which is not a bad thing, it just means the wine is going to need time to be at its best. What really stands out, though, is the push and pull between the bright aromatics that this cool, clay-rich soil helped give in 2018, and the ripe, radiant fruit of the warm summer. That interplay makes for an absolutely compelling wine. Red cherry fruit, mint, dried flowers, cedar and tobacco add aromatic nuance to this highly expressive, vibrant Saint-Estèphe. The blend is 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Tasted two times.

The origins of this Saint-Estèphe based estate go back to the XVIIIth century, out of a wedding between the Rivière and Capbern families, and then Capbern and Gasqueton. A few years later, in 1894, the Capbern-Gasqueton purchase a certain… Calon Ségur! Generations succeeded to each other at the head of these two mythical crus of Saint-Estèphe until 2011, which marks the passing of Denise Gasqueton, last owner carrying that name. It is then that Suravenir purchases these estates and blows a new dynamic, with the respect of the history.
Capbern’s terroir features an extraordinary qualitative breeding ground, in the proper nature of the soils. The soils, well exposed and slightly sloping, favor the perfect maturation of the berries and benefit from a good draining.
Under the same management as Calon Ségur, its sister estate, Capbern is benefiting from a gravity fed vat house of 37 vats, and an ageing cellar in which the wines are going to mature for 18 months.
