The Trinite Estate Acaibo by Gonzague and Claire Lurton is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc and 12% Merlot. In the glass, the Gonzague & Claire Trinite Estate Acaibo is medium to deep ruby purple with notes of warm black cherries and berries, cedar and bitter chocolate, exotic spices and a stylish and elegant frame of new oak spice in the nose. On the palate the wine is medium to full bodied, minerally with a great fruit core, firm, pleasantly chewy tannins and seamless freshness. The finish is long and layered. Very (burgundy) classic!
Gonzague and Claire Lurton own several properties in Bordeaux, including Durfort Vivens, Ferrière, Haut-Bages Liberal and La Gurgue. In 2012, they acquired a vineyard in Sonoma County, with the goal of producing Bordeaux-inspired white and red wines. In 2014 they built a small winery and sourced some of the original vines to make it even more authentic. French-born vigneron Nicolas Vonderheyden oversees the management of the vineyards and winemaking. These are classically styled, understated wines that represent great value.

The 2017 Trinite Estate Acaibo is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc and 12% Merlot. It has a medium to deep ruby-purple color and very pretty, youthful nose of violet, warm black cherry compote, black plum, red cherry, redcurrant and aniseed with a streak of iron/graphite and an understated frame of new oak. Medium to full-bodied, it’s very lushly fruited in the mouth, giving up red fruit sparks and oodles of mineral nuance, with firm, chewy tannins and juicy acidity, finishing long. This needs more time in bottle.

Gabrielle en Christophe Lurton zijn vooral bekend van hun werk in Bordeaux, maar sinds 2012 zijn ze ook actief in de Verenigde Staten. Ze kozen bewust voor Sonoma County in Californië, een regio met veel microklimaten en een indrukwekkende diversiteit aan terroirs. Daar zagen ze de kans om hun Franse ervaring te combineren met de zon, koelte en rijke bodems van Sonoma. Het resultaat: wijnen die zowel elegant als krachtig zijn, met een duidelijk internationale uitstraling.
De stap naar Sonoma was een grote, maar niet onlogische. De familie Lurton is al generaties verbonden aan Bordeaux en staat bekend om hun pioniersgeest. Gabrielle en Christophe wilden een nieuwe uitdaging aangaan en bewijzen dat Bordeaux-druiven ook buiten Frankrijk terroir-gedreven wijnen kunnen opleveren. Sinds hun eerste jaargang is de naam G & C Lurton in Sonoma uitgegroeid tot een symbool van samenwerking tussen Oude Wereld en Nieuwe Wereld.
De wijngaarden van G & C Lurton in Sonoma richten zich vooral op Cabernet Sauvignon, de druif die ook in Bordeaux centraal staat. De Californische zon zorgt voor rijp, donker fruit en geconcentreerde aroma’s, terwijl de koele invloeden van de Stille Oceaan frisheid en spanning behouden. Naast Cabernet Sauvignon werken ze ook met Merlot en soms een vleugje Petit Verdot, waardoor de blends herkenbaar blijven voor Bordeaux-liefhebbers, maar met een extra Californische twist.
Sonoma staat bekend om zijn grote diversiteit aan microklimaten. Dicht bij de kust is het koel en mistig, terwijl de valleien landinwaarts veel warmer zijn. Voor Cabernet Sauvignon betekent dat een lange rijpingsperiode met voldoende zon, maar ook voldoende afkoeling in de nacht. Dat contrast tussen warm en koel zorgt voor rijke wijnen met rijpe tannines én levendige zuren. Precies dat evenwicht maakt de wijnen van G & C Lurton uit Sonoma zo bijzonder.
