Description
This is the showpiece of Fattoria Le Pupille called Saffredi. The vineyard for this top wine grows 250 meters above sea level and is very small, 5 hectares. After the manual harvest, the Super Tuscan matures for 18 months in oak barrels of which 75% is new barrel. This gives it a lot of tannins and structure, delicious what a beast of a wine! In the smell ripe black fruit such as blackberries and berries complemented by herbs, vanilla, oak wood and plums. In the taste this Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi is very complex with many notes of black fruit, cinnamon, vanilla, cedar wood and much more! spacious and cherries in the nose. In the mouth lots of black fruit, jam and a hint of coffee and tobacco. Lasts a long time with a spicy-smoky touch. The discovery continues with this wine! This is an amazing wine and 2017 has received no less than 97/100 Parker points.

Wow, there is a very impressive freshness here that defies the heat of this vintage. The 2017 Saffredi does not seem like a 2017 at all. Now celebrating its 30th birthday, Saffredi is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. Thanks to the vineyard's proximity to the sea, leaving leaves on the vines and the sharp diurnal shifts of the area, the fruit was able to ripen in a balanced manner despite the hot and dry summer. The team at Fattoria le Pupille knew they would have to be ready to harvest early and lose some their yields, and they did. In the end, production was down 25%, but the result is a fresh, thick and beautiful red made with ripe fruit and dark concentration. This is a great effort from Fattoria le Pupille. This wine will be released in November.

Just bottled, the 2017 Saffredi is a huge, unctuous wine that captures all the natural richness of the year in spades. Rich and super-concentrated, with huge fruit, the 2017 is going to need a number of years to shed some of its baby fat, but it is a superb wine in the making. Coffee, licorice and spice all develop, and yet it is the wine's sheer depth that leaves the lasting impression.

These are some of the most impressive wines I have ever tasted from Le Pupille. Proprietor Elisabetta Geppetti and winemaker Luca D’Attoma have really found the sweet spot for a number of these wines by focusing on gentler vinifications and lowering the overt influence of oak. The results are obvious. All I can say is: Wow!

World famous in Tuscany: the visionary Elisabetta Geppetti. With Fattoria Le Pupille she put Maremma on the map. She makes wines with the highest possible scores, never finished, never finished Geppetti goes for the very best. With her icon wine the Saffredi in the lead.
An eye for detail and extreme dedication from both Geppetti and famous winemaker Luca D'Attoma ensure a wine of this caliber. 30-year-old cabernet sauvignon and merlot vines, growing at an altitude of 250 meters, provide highly concentrated late-harvested grapes. The poor sandy soils make it so difficult for the sticks that there is only quality in the grapes. After the fermentation, it ripens for 18 months on small (75% new) barriques and a few months in the bottle.
Together, the nature and perfectionism of the Geppetti / D'Attoma duo ensure not only a top wine, but an icon with character. While there is no sangiovese in it, you can smell the typical Tuscan scents of dried red cherries, thyme, tobacco, graphite and flowers. All very precisely and delicately recognizable. On the palate intensity like a great Burgundy: a lot of taste, refinement, full and yet airy and elegant.
Le Pupille traditionally consists of two farms that, like outward looking pupils (eyes), could protect the village behind Pereta. From the beginning, passion for top wine was clear. The first harvest year only came on the market four years after the harvest and the 'godfather of the Super Tuscans' Giacomo Tachis (Sassicaia, Ornellaia etc.) was appointed as an advisory oenologist. Elisabetta Geppetti already knew as a child that wine was going to be the ambassador of the beautiful Maremma.
After the death of Tachis, Luca d'Attoma, known from the cult domain Tua Rita, was hired as an advisory winemaker and that is bearing fruit. Where Le Pupille has always been good, it has impressed in recent years with wines that are close to the ultimate score. Now affordable, in a few years you want that you had purchased several boxes for the current prices.
